ATHENS, Ohio (Aug. 2, 2012)The rise of the Rocky Mountains and the appearance of a major seaway that divided North America may have boosted the evolution of new dinosaur species, according to a new Ohio University-led study.

The finding, published today in the journal PLOS ONE, may explain patterns of evolution and migration of North American duck-billed and horned dinosaurs in the years leading up to their extinction 65 million years ago, said Terry Gates, a postdoctoral researcher with Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine who is lead author on the study.

"Over the past century, paleontologists have found a wide variety of dinosaurs in rocks dating to around 75 million years ago, but right before the asteroid hit at the end of the Cretaceous, there appeared to be fewer species in North America," he said. "The reason for this discrepancy in dinosaur diversity has never been adequately explained."

Gates and collaborators Albert Prieto-Mrquez and Lindsay Zanno turned to the geologic record of western North America for possible answers. They examined trends in mountain and ocean formation during a period 80-70 million years ago, when there was an apparent explosion of dinosaur species, and later, when species became less diverse.

The record painted a picture of pronounced geological change.

During the early to middle Cretaceous, geological forces lifted the western United States, creating a huge mountain range (the Sevier Mountains) that extended in a line from the American southwest through Alberta, Canada. The area just to the east of the new mountain range flexed downward, creating a shallow North American seaway (known as the Western Interior Seaway) that flooded the continent from the Canadian arctic to the Gulf of Mexico.

This seaway cut the continent into three large islands to the north, east and west that were densely populated with dinosaurs. The dinosaurs of the west lived on an island known as Laramidia. Most fossil discoveries have been made in the area of the northern part of the island, in places such as Alberta, South Dakota and Montana, while dinosaurs have been found only recently in the former areas of southern Laramidia.

"Western North America has been a hotbed for dinosaur discoveries for more than a century," Zanno noted, "but the recent explosion of new dinosaur species coming out of Utah is sending waves through the paleontological community and revolutionized our understanding of dinosaur evolution on the continent."

The new discoveries have helped illustrate how dinosaurs evolved on an island with changing geography. The rise of the Sevier Mountains and the growing seaway caused dinosaur habitat to shrink on Laramidia. Later, one of the tectonic plates under North America's crust shifted position, building another mountain rangethe Laramide Orogeny, or the infant stage of the modern-day Rocky Mountainsfurther east.

"At that time, it appears that geographic, as well as probably also ecological, barriers created by the rise of mountain ranges and the seaway caused isolation of the northern and southern populations of the crested duck-billed and horned plant-eating dinosaurs. We hypothesize that such isolation facilitated rapid speciation and increased diversity in these animals," explained Prieto-Mrquez.

The new species of duck-billed and horned dinosaurs were being born at an astounding rate of every few hundred thousand years during the brief time when the two mountain ranges and the seaway coexisted, Gates said. "Isolating populations allows them to evolve new features more rapidly, especially when skull ornamentation such as head crests and horns play a role," he said.

Eventually, however, the continued rise of the Rocky Mountains would evict the seaway from the continent's interior. Gates and his colleagues argue that this second geological change opened up a wide territory for duck-billed and horned dinosaurs to roam, that, in turn, reduced how fast new species evolved in the region to every few million years.

"Our data suggests that changing geography contributed to the pattern we see in western North America, but also that this pattern is unique to this region and should not be blindly extrapolated to infer global diversity leading up to the K-T extinction event," Zanno noted.

The study also found that the same species of at least some duck-billed dinosaurs lived from Canada through southern Utah at some points in the Cretaceous. Yet, during the times of isolation, these giant plant-eaters "roamed a much smaller area than you might think given that many were larger than elephants," Gates noted. Scientists hypothesize that there are ecological as well as geological reasons behind this, including the possibility that dinosaurs evolved to eat specialized plants found only in certain regions.

The mountain and seaway changes not only impacted dinosaur diversity in North America, but may have had implications in other parts of the world. Global geological changes during this time created migration routes to Asia and South America. The team speculates that the rise of the early Rocky Mountains in North America created a barrier. Only species living in the southern part of Laramidia island could get to South America and only species living north of the mountains would have been able get to Asia across modern-day Alaska.

"These giant herbivores were truly invasive species that seemingly came to dominate these other continents," said Gates, adding that this idea needs to be tested further with additional fossil remains.

Boxing - Britain's Ogogo shocks favourite

LONDON (Reuters) - British middleweight Anthony Ogogo caused the first big boxing shock of the Olympics on Thursday, upsetting gold medal favourite Evhen Khytrov in front of a vociferous crowd that included Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip.

Ogogo, whose hopes of making it to his first Olympics were nearly ruined by a serious shoulder injury last year, became the first Briton to reach the quarter-finals after he beat the Ukrainian world amateur champion by the tightest of margins.

World number one Khytrov came back from two points down in the first round to level at 18-18 at the end of the bout and after the pair could still not be separated when the judges' individual scores were totted up to show 52-52, they were each asked to call a winner.

After an anxious three minute wait, the longest for a decision at the Games so far, the 23-year-old Briton was deemed the winner and fell to his knees before leaping around the ring and beating his chest to the delight of a packed house.

The Ukrainian team, shocked at losing the top seed, lodged an appeal which the International Boxing Association (AIBA) said did not mention any specific motivation and was rejected.

To add to the confusion, the official draw sheet showed the scores of three judges which when added up, scored the fight 53-52 in Khytrov's favour.

"Nobody thought I was going to win that fight apart from me, my team and my family. I don't think even the rest of my team mates thought I was going to win it," Ogogo, who landed some big early right hand shots before surviving two standing counts, Ogogo told reporters.

"I just believed in myself and that's all you have to do. I want to inspire people, that's what the Olympics is all about for me."

The Ukrianian Olympic Committee told Reuters they were considering tkaing their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, pointing to the fact that the scorecard was carrying a score in favour of their fighter.

However a spokesman for AIBA said there was no mistake in the final score and that the system only showed selected scores and that when a bout is tied, the calculations are made based on the complete individual scores.

AIBA later released all the judges scores for each round and the countback to explain how they reached the tie, the first time, it said, that individual judges' scores have been published in full.

Remarkably a flyweight bout between Han Soon-chul of South Korea and Hungary's Vazgen Safaryants also finished level after all three rounds and a subsequent countback. A cornerman for Safaryants said they would complain after the Korean was awarded the win.

SICK MOTHER

Only six weeks ago, Ogogo had to put his preparations for the Olympics to one side when his mother Teresa suffered a brain haemorrhage. She was still too ill in hospital to watch her son's first fight on Saturday.

Ogogo, who is now just one fight away from a guaranteed medal, said he deserved the victory after everything he has been through

"It's so much sweeter but that's what got me over the finish line," he said. The British fighter next faces Stefan Hartel of Germany on Monday.

Earlier the crowd were treated to a boxing masterclass by Khytrov's team mate Vasyl Lomachenko, who won featherweight gold at the Beijing Games.

The Ukrainian showed exactly why he is overwhelming favourite for men's lightweight gold, barely moving out of first gear in an effortless yet brilliantly impressive 15-3 victory over Wellington Arias Romero of the Dominican Republic.

Resistance Bands: The Key to Simple, Effective Muscle Building ...

Resistance Band

Why do resistance training?

Whether you are young or old, resistance training can provide many?benefits to your body and quality of life. It is a great addition to?aerobic exercise (walking fast, bicycling, swimming, etc.) and it is?something you can do in your home in as little as 20 minutes a day, afew times a week. Below are just some of the many benefits of?resistance training:

? Daily Living: Increase your strength and physical ability,?allowing you to be more active and independent.

? Prevention: Prevent musculoskeletal disabilities, including osteoporosis and lower back pain.

? Mental Health: Exercise improves your overall well-being and can help with things like?depression and anxiety.

? Overall Health: Both exercise and weight loss have positive effects on things like blood pressure, insulin resistance, and heart disease.

What exercises should I do?

Resistance training isolates one muscle group at a time, so it?s important that you do several different?exercises to target all of your muscle groups for balanced strength throughout your body. The more?muscle you have overall, the more calories you will burn while resting ? so workout both your upper and?lower body. For starters, there is a simple, but effective resistance band workout routine you do try here:?Resistance Band Workout. Of course, there are 100+ workout routines on this site that you can also choose from.

What should my intensity be?

Start at an intensity that you feel comfortable with, but is also challenging. Try to work out with?resistance bands 2 to 3 time per week for 20 to 30 minutes per workout. You should be able to do 2?sets of 16 repetitions for each exercise (i.e. bicep curls) and the last few repetitions should be difficult.?If you are struggling early in a set, just give yourself a little more slack on the elastic band so that you?can do more reps with the next set. As you get stronger with time, keep readjusting by ?choking up? on?the band so that you remain at this intensity and continue to make gains.

Resistance training should be something you do along with aerobic exercise because both types of?exercise are good for your health By combining aerobic exercise and resistance training, you will?optimize your increases in strength, physical ability, weight loss, and heart health. A good plan is to go?for a fast walk or jog on one day and do resistance training on the next.

What next?

If your resistance band workout is no longer challenging enough, you can buy stronger resistance bands,?dumbbells, or even join a gym. Many of the same exercises done with resistance bands can be adapted?for dumbbells and vice versa. Although not necessary, dumbbells may give you more variety that you?may desire. Also, combining dumbbells and resistance bands together for a workout is a great way to?challenge your muscles in different ways. By continuing to challenge yourself, you will not only?maintain your milestones, but continue to improve your health. Always remember ?that this is about?improving yourself and your livelihood ? stay motivated and you can do it!

US women top NKorea 1-0, win Olympic soccer group

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? Abby Wambach became the first non-British woman to score a goal at Old Trafford. She and her teammates celebrated by coercing Hope Solo to get on the ground and do "the worm."

There were other such moments unfamiliar to the venerable home of Manchester United on Tuesday, when chants of "U-S-A!" echoed for the Americans' 1-0 win over North Korea in front of 29,522 fans ? easily the largest crowd ever to occupy the familiar red seats for a women's game.

"The worm at Old Trafford! Are you kidding me?" Solo said.

The victory gave the U.S. team first place in its group with three wins in three games, the first time the Americans have ever swept their group opponents in Olympic play. They were already assured a berth in the next round entering the game, and they'll now move on to Newcastle for a quarterfinal match on Friday.

Although claiming to be a reluctant participant, Solo and captain Christie Rampone flopped to the ground after Wambach's goal in the 25th minute. The other nine players joined hands, wriggled their arms like a giant worm and pointed to the pair of players doing the funky dance move from the 1970s and '80s.

"Hope doesn't get involved in the celebrations very often," Wambach said. "And so we wanted to get her involved, and she said the worm is one of the things that she can contribute, so we kind of planned it out before the game. Thankfully we got the goal so that we could actually display it."

Solo could probably pick any dance she wanted, having appeared on "Dancing With the Stars" last year. Wambach said the celebration was a late birthday present for the goalkeeper, who turned 31 on Monday, but it also served to reinforce team camaraderie after Solo's recent Twitter rant that prompted a meeting with the coach and captains.

"I think that Hope prefers the wins and the shutouts as birthday presents," Wambach said. "But it was great to get her involved because it makes us feel what the game is about. It's about fun. It's about laughing and enjoying it out there ? because how often are you going to say you played at Old Trafford and scored a goal?"

Old Trafford had hosted only domestic women's games previously. The last one was an FA Cup final in 1989 that drew less than 1,000 fans.

"You think of the great players that have played out there before us, and the goals that have been scored," defender Amy LePeilbet said. "It's one of the highlights of my career."

North Korea finished with a 1-2 record in the group and still had a chance to advance, depending on the results of Tuesday's other games. The team completed the game with 10 players after Choe Mi Gyong was sent off with a second yellow card in the 81st minute following a tackle on Lauren Cheney.

The North Koreans are ranked in the top 10 in the world, but they remain an unknown in women's soccer because their players and officials have limited interaction with other teams. They sent a very young squad to these Olympics: Their average age of 19 years, 11 months made them look like a junior club next to the Americans, who checked in at 28 years, 1 month.

"Our team is made up of very young players, so there is nobody who can blame them for not doing well," coach Sin Ui Gun said through an interpreter. "This time it was a great experience for them."

With a place in the next round assured, U.S. coach Pia Sundhage had her players take it easy in the second half, slowing the pace of play to keep the legs fresh for the quarterfinals. North Korea nearly capitalized with a tying goal, producing several scoring threats in a three-minute stretch that forced Solo to the ground twice.

"There were times when we could have possessed the ball better," Sundhage said. "We were a little bit naive, naive in the middle. I can see the players want to do some great things out there ? it is the Olympics ? but sometimes we could have been a little bit smarter and kept the ball."

Mostly, however, Solo had plenty of downtime to think about her next series of tweets. She ruffled feathers after the last game by using Twitter to criticize NBC analyst and former U.S. player Brandi Chastain's commentary. Despite the meeting with the coach, Solo didn't back down her comments and said Tuesday the team wasn't affected by any distractions.

"Do you see the way our team is performing?" Solo said. "We're having fun. We're scoring goals. We swept our group. I don't think there's any distractions."

The goal came on a play set up by Cheney's long ball to Alex Morgan, who slid a pass between two defenders to Wambach for an easy tap-in and her third goal of the tournament. Morgan and Wambach both hit the right post in the first half, part of a series of near-misses that kept the score close.

"Even though some of us played 90 minutes, it was definitely a restful game for a lot of us, which is the most important thing," Wambach said. "Because we need fresh legs going in the quarterfinals, which is where the fun begins. You lose and you go home."
