Obama, Clinton Defend U.S. Syria Policy

President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, in their wide-ranging joint interview on CBS' "60 Minutes," defended what some critics have called the administration's unwillingness to engage in the world, particularly on Syria, which Clinton called a "wicked problem."

Obama pointed to the U.S. role in deposing of Libyan leader Moamer Gadhafi and supporting Egypt's elections following the Arab spring, as success stories. But the president said Syria is a more complicated issue.

"We do nobody a service when we leap before we look, where we take on things without having thought out the consequences of it," the president said, calling Syria a classic example of how the United States should be clear about its objectives whenever taking any action.

"We want to make sure not only that it enhances U.S. security, but also it's doing right by the people of Syria and neighbors like Israel that are going to be profoundly affected by it," he said.

Clinton, who has spent the last year doing intense diplomacy on Syria, including attending global meetings with allies, as well as meeting her Russian counterpart to try to find a solution to the conflict, backed up the president's sentiments.

"I'm older than the president," she joked, then turned serious. "I remember some of the speeches of Eisenhower as a young girl. You know you've got to be careful, you have to be thoughtful, you can't rush in, especially now where it's more complex now than it's been in decades."

Clinton called Syria a "wicked problem" that highlights the delicate balancing act of how to make sure U.S. foreign policy upholds American values and freedom in situations where the solution has the potential to be worse than the problem.

The conflict in Syria has raged on for nearly two years, with estimates of more than 60,000 people dead. As President Bashir Al-Assad continues to wage a brutal campaign against civilians, there are increasing concerns that elements of Syria's opposition have become radicalized, including some having ties to al Qaeda.

Clinton said the president's policy on Syria has been appropriately measured.

"I'm certainly grateful for the president's steady hand and hard questions and thoughtful analysis as to what we should and shouldn't do," he said.

Google Open Source Program Manager Chris DiBona: Best of Both Worlds

In 1996, two Stanford University students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, created a unique search engine called "BackRub" that ran on the school's server. After one year, BackRub's bandwidth outgrew the university's needs. Its creators rebranded BackRub into Google, a respelled reference to "googol." It is a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral 1 followed by 100 zeros.

2013 Range Rover: The Biggest Loser

Range Rover

?

Three-digit weight loss is the automotive game du jour, and the benefits of spunkier performance and thriftier fuel economy are but a few of the upsides sought when engineers shed ballast in redesigned rides. After all, every 220 pounds of weight loss translate to an approximately 2 percent improvement in mpgs, and everybody loves a sprightlier drive.

?

Land Rover's nearly three-ton Range Rover was a prime candidate for slimming down when it faced a fourth-gen redesign, and no weld went unturned in the effort of lightening the hefty Landie. By replacing the hulking chassis with an aluminum structure incorporating 270 pressings, 9 extrusions, 4 tubular braces, and 34 cavity baffles, 397 pounds of fat were jetissoned, contributing to a total weight loss of a staggering 700 or so pounds-- the biggest slim-down we've seen in recent memory. Its carryover powerplants are able to hurtle the hulking SUV to 60 mph in as quickly as 5.1 seconds, nearly a full second faster than its predecessor.

?

While the newest Range Rover enjoys a deceptively compact footprint-- the tall sport 'ute is only 2.9 inches longer than an Audi A6-- the benefits of what Land Rover calls a "virtuous circle of weight reduction" are more than dynamic; they're mighty handy, especially since the corporate average fuel economy requirement of 54.5 mpgs by 2025 looms large.

U.S. warns Antigua against "government-authorized piracy"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Monday warned the tiny Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda not to retaliate against U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling by authorizing the "theft" of U.S. intellectual property.

"Government-authorized piracy would undermine chances for a settlement" in the Internet gambling case, said Nkenge Harmon, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative's office.

"It also would serve as a major impediment to foreign investment in the Antiguan economy, particularly in high-tech industries," Harmon said.

The World Trade Organization authorized Antigua in 2007 to suspend copyright protection on about $21 million of U.S. intellectual property annually after Washington failed to comply with a ruling against a U.S. ban on Internet gambling.

The Caribbean nation on Monday put the United States on notice that it intended to proceed with that action unless the two sides soon reach a negotiated settlement.

"The economy of Antigua and Barbuda has been devastated by the United States Government's long campaign to prevent American consumers from gambling online with offshore gaming operators," Antiguan Finance Minister Harold Lovell said in a statement.

At its height, the remote gaming industry in Antigua was the country's second largest employer, and leading international gaming economists estimated that the industry was worth more than $3.4 billion to the Antiguan economy, the country estimated.

Currently, less than 500 people are employed in the gaming sector, compared to more than 4,000 at its height.

"This economic devastation has been caused by the direct actions of the United States," the government statement said.

Panel approves debt relief, KD 1,000 grant | Kuwait Times

national assembly 300x195 Panel approves debt relief, KD 1,000 grantKUWAIT: The National Assembly?s financial and economic affairs committee yesterday unanimously approved a draft law stipulating that the government will forgive interest on loans taken by Kuwaiti citizens and providing a grant of KD 1,000 to those who will not benefit from the interest write-off. HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah meanwhile told a number of MPs not to rush the issue of the loan interest write-off so as not to negatively impact the Reserve Fund for Future Generations. MP Yacoub Al-Sane, one of those who met the Amir, said ?we assured the Amir that we represent the nation and that we will never accept anything that may harm national interests or the Future Generations Fund?.

According to the bill, interests incurred on bank loans taken between Jan 1, 2002 and March 31, 2008 will be forgiven and debtors will be asked only to repay the principal of the loan. The committee did not provide figures on how many people will benefit from the write-off or the cost of the bill on state coffers. Earlier this month, Central Bank Governor Mohammad Al-Hashel told the same committee that the cost of such a measure will be around KD 1.7 billion. The bill also stipulates that citizens who did not benefit from the waiving off of interest will be given a KD 1,000 grant which will be deposited in a fund called the family fund.

Rapporteur of the panel MP Safa Al-Hashem said the fund will be used to pay all the beneficiary?s debt toward the state like electricity and water bills and others and the rest will be paid to the citizens. Those who have no debt will get the whole amount. Hashem did not provide figures about how much this will cost the state. The bill also allows retired people to seek bank loans equal to 40 percent of their monthly income. There has been no immediate government comment on the bill but Finance Minister Mustafa Al-Shamali had repeatedly said the government will reject any new legislation because it had already established a defaulters? fund to resolve the issue.

In another development, MP Saadoun Hammad sent around 60 new questions to Minister of Oil Hani Hussein as he prepares to grill the minister over a variety of alleged violations. The new questions deal with Kuwait Petroleum Corp (KPC) companies outside Kuwait, the reported sale of liquor at its facilities in foreign countries, their reported losses and the controversial promotions. Hammad had said he would grill the oil minister and is expected to be joined by MPs Nawaf Al-Fuzai and Abdullah Al-Tameemi.

The criminal court meanwhile yesterday sentenced controversial activist and member of the scrapped 2012 Assembly Mohammad Al-Juwaihel for three months in jail and fined him KD 2,000 for writing remarks on Twitter deemed offensive to the Mutairi tribe. Under the ruling, Juwaihel must go to jail immediately but he left the country just before the ruling was issued. Juwaihel later denied that he had fled the country. ?I am in Poland to follow up the studies of my daughter, a genuine Kuwaiti,? he said, promising to turn himself in once he was back in Kuwait.

The criminal court meanwhile will today resume the trial of former opposition MP Musallam Al-Barrak for remarks he made that were deemed offensive to the Amir at a public rally on Oct 15. A defense team of around 20 lawyers was formed to defend Barrak, who was detained for five days and interrogated over the charges which he denied.

Florida man accused of fraud after name change in 'act of love'

MIAMI (Reuters) - A newly married South Florida man who opted to take his wife's last name is fighting the state's Department of Motor Vehicles after it suspended his driving license on grounds of fraud.

Real estate investor Lazaro Sopena offered to change his name following his 2011 marriage to Hanh Dinh in order to help his wife's Vietnamese family perpetuate their family surname.

Shortly after their marriage, Lazaro Dinh obtained a new passport and Social Security card and changed his bank account and credit cards before applying to update his drivers license.

"It was an act of love. I have no particular emotional ties to my last name," said Dinh, 40, who was born in Cuba and came to the United States at the age of 11 in 1984.

His wife, Hanh Dinh, 32, has four sisters and came to the U.S. in 1990, after a family odyssey involving living in refugee camps and being separated from her father for 7 years.

Lazaro Dinh was initially issued a new license after presenting his marriage certificate at his local DMV office and paying a $20 fee, just as newly married women are required to do when they adopt their husband's name.

"It was easy. When the government issues you a new passport you figure you're fine," he said.

More than a year later Dinh received a letter from Florida's DMV last December accusing him of "obtaining a driving license by fraud," and advising him that his license would be suspended at the end of the month. Ironically, it was addressed to Lazaro Dinh.

"I thought it was a mistake," he said.

But when he called the state DMV office in Tallahassee he said he was told he had to go to court first in order to change his name legally, a process that takes several months and has a $400 filing fee.

When he explained he was changing his name due to marriage, he was told 'that only works for women,'" he said.

"Apparently the state of Florida clings to the out-dated notion that treats women as an extension of a man," said Lazaro's lawyer, Spencer Kuvin, with Cohen & Kuvin in West Palm Beach. While it was unusual for a man to seek to be considered an extension on his wife, Dinh's case raised important issues for gay marriage, he noted.

"If Lazaro isn't allowed to change his name, what is going to happen when a gay couple seeks a name change?"

Only a few states have made their marriage name change policy gender neutral, Kuvin said. In Florida's case it has no law, although the DMV's website does not specify gender.

According to Kuvin, 9 states enable a man to change his name upon marriage: California, New York, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Oregon, Iowa, Georgia and North Dakota.

The Florida DMV did not respond to a request for comment.

Following a DMV hearing, Dinh was issued a Final Order on January 14 confirming that his license had been properly suspended for fraud.

He is now appealing that order but has not dared get behind the wheel.

"I don't understand. I'm being treated like a highway criminal," said Dinh, who said he has a perfect driving record and now is struggling to carry out his job, begging his wife and friends for rides.

Video: Matthews: The GOP needs a ?Ronald Reagan for the 21st century?

>>> let me finish tonight with this. i think the republican party got the message. not all republicans, but a decent number of them. they ran a kennedy who didn't believe in what he was saying. people don't want to agree with the middle of this country. people would rather be right, even far right, than having a hand in picking a president. someone in that party has to come along and offer themselves as a true center right kennedy. someone who's solid on fiscal matters, strong on defense, but plays down their social issues. someone with charisma. i'm talking about a ronald reagan for the 21st century . unlikely to find such a candidate. but unless they do, they're stuck in second place, nationally. they can't beat hillary clinton , that's for sure. not with the rogue elements they've got joining their huddle. not with the candidate that only reads the words well enough to get the nomination. but not well enough, did you notice to be picked as a president? that's "hardball." thanks for being with us. "politics nation" with al sharpton starts right now.
