Soulja Boy and Lil? Scrappy Take Beef to Twitter

by Jake Crates

(AllHipHop News) Although Soulja Boy and Lil? Scrappy share a common bond of having dated former Crime Mobb rapper Diamond, there was nothing in common today (December 30th), when two took to Twitter to express their differences.

While some have already written off this disagreement as issues surrounding Diamond, Lil? Scrappy has tried to make it clear that this is not about Diamond, despite Soulja Boy?s claims via Twitter that suggest otherwise.

Over the past few years, Scrappy has gained a great deal of attention via VH1?s Television show ?Love & Hip Hop Atlanta,? where his life was highly publicized and documented as his girlfriend Erica Dixon and mother, a former hustler known as ?Momma Dee? were both featured on the show.

Soulja Boy, best known for his hit song?Crank That,? which was certified platinum four times by the RIAA, has recently stated that he is no longer dating Diamond.

Here are their respective Twitter threads below:

Former NBA player Jerome Whitehead found dead

Jerome Whitehead, who stared in college at Marquette and went on to have a 12-year NBA career, has died.

He was found dead in his home in El Cajon, Calif;, (near San Diego) back on Dec. 20, reports the Chicago Tribune and multiple other outlets. He was discovered by his sister and apparently had been passed away for a little while, according to the report.

An autopsy found that Whitehead had died from a gastrointestinal hemorrhage related to chronic alcohol abuse, an investigator at the examiner?s office said.

Whitehead was a 6?10 center (and occasional forward) who was drafted in the second round of the 1978 draft by the then San Diego Clippers and went on to play for Utah, Dallas, Golden State and San Antonio. He averaged 6.5 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. In the 1981-82 season he averaged 13.8 points a game for the San Diego Clippers.

Whitehead was a key part of Marquette?s 1977 national championship team.

Iran: US plane leaves after emergency landing

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? A small American commercial plane left Iran Sunday after it was repaired following an emergency landing at an Iranian airport this month, state TV reported.

The plane was forced to land 16 days ago at the airport of the southern city of Ahvaz due to technical failure, Mahmoud Rasoulinejad, head of the state-owned Iran Airports Company, told the TV station.

Rasoulinejad said three passengers left Iran for Arab countries in the Gulf, but the plane remained under repair in the airport. He said the plane took off from Iran Sunday upon arrival of needed spare parts and completion of repairs.

It was not clear why the announcement of the plane's landing was not made earlier.

Iran is a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, which requires members to come to the aid of civilian aircraft when requested.

The service was provided though Iran and U.S. are at odds over Tehran's suspect nuclear program. The West believes it might be aimed at weapons development, a charge Iran denies.

A separate report by state TV said the Falcon-900 plane had one passenger and two crew members and was flying to Rotterdam in the Netherlands from Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates when it encountered mechanical difficulties.

It said a French team from Abu Dhabi repaired the plane at Ahvaz airport.

Every day some 500 foreign airplanes pass through Iranian airspace, including 30 American aircraft.

Provide scientists and policymakers with insights for selecting and managing conservation areas

How can a square meter of meadow contain tens of species of plants? And what factors determine the number of species that live in an ecosystem? Science journal has defined this as one of the 25 most important unresolved questions in science, both for its importance in understanding nature and due to the value of natural ecosystems for mankind. The value of goods and services provided by natural ecosystems is estimated to exceed the GDP of our planet.

For over 50 years, conventional ecological theories have predicted that the number of species that can coexist in a given area increases with the heterogeneity of the environmental conditions in the habitat. This premise was examined in a study conducted by research students Omri Allouche and Michael Kalyuzhny, guided by Prof. Ronen Kadmon from the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in collaboration with Prof. Gregorio Moreno-Rueda and Prof. Manuel Pizarro from Universidad de Granada.

The researchers claim that in a heterogeneous environment where there are many different types of habitats there are fewer resources and less suitable area available to each species, making them more vulnerable to local extinction. This leads to the hypothesis that excessive habitat heterogeneity may actually reduce the number of species.

This hypothesis was examined using mathematical models and empirical analyses of natural ecosystems. Its predictions were examined with a meta-analysis of tens of datasets of plant and animal species from various localities worldwide.

Both the theoretical results and the data analyses supported the researchers' hypothesis that habitat heterogeneity may increase the rate of species extinctions and therefore reduce the number of species that inhabit the ecosystem.

These findings are very important for the conservation of biodiversity, since the current practice is to conserve areas of maximal habitat heterogeneity and even to take measures to increase habitat heterogeneity. The study shows that this conventional approach may lead to negative results, especially in the case of landscapes of limited size, which is typical of nature reserves.

Ecosystems and the species they consist of are under increasing pressure of human activity. In these conditions, skillful and intelligent management of natural landscapes is vital. This study provides scientists and policy makers with important insights for the selection and management of areas for conservation.

###

The study, Areaheterogeneity tradeoff and the diversity of ecological communities, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It was funded by the Israel Science Foundation and by Israel's Ministry of Science and Technology.

Friends recall wedding plans of Indian gang-rape victim

Agence France-Presse

An Indian protester shouts slogans as he is stopped by police during a protest against a recent gang-rape of a young woman in a moving bus in New Delhi, India, Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012. Another victim of gang rape in India, a 17-year-old girl, committed suicide after police pressured her to drop the case and marry one of her attackers, police and a relative said on Thursday. AP FILE PHOTO

NEW DELHI?She was due to marry her boyfriend in a matter of weeks, was the apple of her father?s eye and her friends were convinced she would achieve great things after completing her medical studies.

While India has seen an outpouring of grief for the 23-year-old who suffered fatal injuries when she was gang-raped on December 16, those who actually knew her paint a portrait of a young woman who was both in love and much loved.

Although not formally engaged, it was well-known by her friends that she was planning to marry the boyfriend who also suffered serious injuries in the same attack that would ultimately lead to her death.

Meena Rai said that she had been shopping with the unnamed victim for wedding outfits and the contents of a wedding box.

?She was supposed to get married in February to the same guy who was attacked on the bus with her,? said Rai, who lived next door in Mahavir Enclave, a neighborhood in southwestern New Delhi.

?They had made all the wedding preparations and had planned a wedding party in Delhi,? she told AFP.

Another friend who attended the cremation ceremony on Sunday confirmed that the wedding was due to take place in a matter of weeks.

?We know that she was going to get married in February,? Usha Rai (no relation) told AFP. ?The whole neighborhood was excited about it.?

The young couple had spent the evening together at a mall watching ?The Life of Pi? before they boarded a bus they thought would take them home.

According to reports, the frenzied attack on the pair began when the boyfriend objected to taunts about why an unmarried woman was out so late.

The gang clubbed him with an iron rod before they then turned on her.

The everyday image of a young couple enjoying a night out at the movies has been cited by many Indians to explain why they have been able to relate so much to the plight of someone whose name they will never know.

But others have identified with the backstory of a hardworking student whose family hail from rural India but who was looking to make a name for herself as a young urban professional with the eager backing of her proud parents.

Her parents sold their small piece of land in rural Uttar Pradesh in order to fund their daughter?s education, often limiting their own meals to little more than rotis with namak (bread with salt), according to friends.

In a frontpage tribute, The Hindustan Times said that she was ?invariably among the top students in her class and was determined to earn well and repay her father who had sold his ancestral land to fund her studies?.

Employed as a loader at Delhi?s international airport, the father used to say he was ?investing in my daughter?s future as she will be the one who takes care of me when I get old?, according to Meena Rai.

Her childhood was mainly spent in a one-bedroom flat near the airport that she shared with her two brothers as well as her parents.

A younger cousin still living back in the parental village in Uttar Pradesh told the Times of India how the young medical student had been an ?inspiration?.

?Seeing her do well, I was determined to study as well,? she said.

Other residents of the village recalled a young woman whose passion to succeed in medicine shone through when she paid a visit back home.

?Hers was a story of charming ordinariness, of aspiration and hard work, of pleasure in life?s little joys,? said the Hindustan Times.

how to Implement a Virtual Machine (VM) of Windows on Linux platform

Here is a good step-by-step tutorial (for Windows XP, but I'm sure you can figure out how to do other versions too).

for the user it should look alike windows but actually performing his applications on linux platform

There are actually many versions of Linux that do look or can look very familiar to Windows users. And many windows applications can run in Wine. The KDE-based distributions (with Plasma desktop) can actually be customized to look almost identical to any version of Windows (from win95 to win7) or any version of Mac OSX, at least, on the surface (look and feel of the desktop). So, I think that what corresponds better to the description of "looks like Windows but is Linux" are one those Windows-looking Linux distributions, not Windows running in a VM inside Linux. The added bonus is that you don't have to pay for all the software that you would normally use in Windows (unless it is specialized software, most of which are also available for Linux nowadays).

China cracks down further on control of internet..truth bad ...

art_china_internet-620x349

http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/china-cracks-down-further-on-control-of-internet-20121228-2byeu.html

China?s new communist leaders are increasing already tight controls on internet use and electronic publishing following a spate of embarrassing online reports about official abuses.

The measures suggest China?s new leader, Xi Jinping, and others who took power in November share their predecessors? anxiety about the internet?s potential to spread opposition to one-party rule and their insistence on controlling information despite promises of more economic reforms.

?They are still very paranoid about the potentially destabilising effect of the internet,? said Willy Lam, a politics specialist at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. ?They are on the point of losing a monopoly on information, but they still are very eager to control the dissemination of views.?

This week, China?s legislature took up a measure to require internet users to register their real names, a move that would curtail the web?s status as a freewheeling forum to complain, often anonymously, about corruption and official abuses. The legislature scheduled a news conference on Friday to discuss the measure, suggesting it was expected to be approved.

That comes amid reports Beijing might be disrupting use of software that allows web surfers to see sites abroad that are blocked by its extensive internet filters. At the same time, regulators have proposed rules that would bar foreign companies from distributing books, news, music and other material online in China.

Beijing promotes internet use for business and education but bans material deemed subversive or obscene and blocks access to foreign websites run by human rights and Tibet activists and some news outlets. Controls were tightened after social media played a role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

In a reminder of the web?s role as a political forum, a group of 70 prominent Chinese scholars and lawyers circulated an online petition this week appealing for free speech, independent courts and for the ruling party to encourage private enterprise.

Xi and others on the party?s ruling seven-member Standing Committee have tried to promote an image of themselves as men of the people who care about China?s poor majority. They have promised to press ahead with market-oriented reforms and to support entrepreneurs but have given no sign of support for political reform.

Communist leaders who see the internet as a source of economic growth and better-paid jobs were slow to enforce the same level of control they impose on movies, books and other media, apparently for fear of hurting fledgling entertainment, shopping and other online businesses.

Until recently, web surfers could post comments online or on microblog services without leaving their names.

That gave ordinary Chinese a unique opportunity to express themselves to a public audience in a society where newspapers, television and other media are state-controlled. The most popular microblog services say they have more than 300 million users and some users have millions of followers reading their comments.

PFT: Bills, Jets end bad years; changes will come

Dallas Cowboys v Washington RedskinsGetty Images

As you take a breath following a riveting regular-season finale between the Packers and Vikings and wait for what necessarily will be the first game of the 2012 postseason, take a look at this item from Judy Battista of the New York Times regarding the manner in which the NFL planned the final course of a 17-week meal.

The seeds were planted several years ago, when the NFL decided to go with intra-division games for the last week of the season.? More recently, the NFL began to pay attention to the scheduling of the games played on the final Sunday of the season.

That Cowboys-Redskins game, with the winner capturing the NFC East and the loser heading home, nearly couldn?t have happened because the NFL and NBC considered placing the Week 16 game between the Saints and Cowboys on NBC.? Doing so would have maxed out the Cowboys? national-TV allotment for the year, preventing the Cowboys from appearing in prime time in Week 17.

In all, 10 of the 16 games from the final week of the season had playoff implications, and the NFL deliberately selected games like the Packers and Vikings for a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff and not for prime time because there?s no guarantee that the outcome would have changed playoff scenarios.? The Packers could have sewn up the No. 2 seed before 8:30 p.m. ET, and the Vikings could have nailed down a playoff berth before playing their final game of the year.

And so the NFL chose to go with Cowboys-Redskins, even though FOX didn?t want to give up that game.

?FOX wasn?t thrilled, but we have constant dialogue with them,? Howard Katz, NFL senior V.P. of broadcasting and media operations told Battista.? ?They let us know they?d like to keep the Dallas game if at all possible. It could have been Green Bay going for the 1 seed, Minnesota having to win to get the 6 seed and Adrian Peterson going for the rushing record. But in the end, there were things that could have negated it all. We had to go with the sure thing.?

The only sure thing was Cowboys at Redskins, which became even more of a sure thing once the Bears won, preventing the Redskins from backing in to the postseason with a loss.

The message is that, while the Week 17 slate already featured plenty of compelling games with playoff implications, the NFL specifically configured the day to maximize the drama inherent to the effort both to qualify for the playoffs and to capture the highest possible seed.

For Sunday night, the drama will be high.? Cowboys vs. Redskins, in the biggest installment of the rivalry since they squared off in the 1982 NFC title game.

Real Estate Expert William Bill Price Reveals Why Now is the Best ...

As someone who?s interested in investing in Frederick Maryland real estate, you?re likely someone who sees opportunity where others see a falling market. The reality is that a ?bad? means it?s the best time to invest. In this article, I?ll show you why now is the best time to invest in Frederick Maryland real estate.

Foreclosure sign

The old adage of any investment is to buy low and wait for it?s value to rise, then sell high. The real estate market is different from the stock market where when you buy a stock low you risk losing your money if the company sinks or doesn?t come back up. The reality is that real estate will always be in demand, because we?re not getting any more space and more and more people need places to live. Supply and demand dictates that over time, real estate must rise in prices.

Right now is one of the best times in history to buy because housing prices are at a historic low. Not only that, we have more foreclosers today than ever in history. As an investor, this is a huge opportunity for you.

People who can no longer afford their house still need a place to live. That means that the renter?s market is very active right now, because people are desperately looking for places to rent. In other words, housing prices are low and rent demand is high, plus the potential for your investments to go up is limitless. As an investor, what more could you hope for?

If it wasn?t clear already, the best strategy in this market is likely to be the ?buy and hold? strategy. There are very few investors who can make a living by flipping properties right now. One reason is that the market could fall faster than you?d make from your flip anyway. Another reason is that there simply isn?t a good buyer?s market for you to unload your properties.

These are just some of the reasons why now is the best time to invest in Frederick Maryland real estate. Remember that windows of opportunity don?t often stay open for very long. It?s important to act while you?ve got the chance.

Obama: Troops aiding African diplomat evacuation

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama says 50 U.S. troops have deployed to the African country of Chad to help evacuate U.S. citizens and embassy personnel from the neighboring Central African Republic's capital of Bangui in the face of rebel advances toward the city.

Obama informed congressional leaders of Thursday's deployment in a letter Saturday citing a "deteriorating security situation" in the Central African Republic.

The evacuation of the U.S. diplomats comes in the wake of criticism of the Obama administration's handling of diplomatic security at its consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The ambassador and three other Americans were killed in a Sept. 11 attack.

In the Central African Republic, rebels have seized at least 10 northern towns. On Saturday they continued their advance, seizing the city of Sibut, 114 miles from Bangui.

Effective Online Marketing Principles For Successful ... - Maynas Eric

Running a business of your own is a great way to take charge of your life, but it also you should be skilled at sales. Becoming a successful Internet marketer can make those dreams possible, and the tips provided here can help you get started.

Consider doing your own email marketing. It is fairly easy to learn how to use auto responders, mass mailers and to build an email list. The added bonus is that you will have the knowledge, so it will be easier and easier, each time you do it.

Give something away. A great free downloadable item to offer is an article related to your product or services. It could be an introductory article explaining your product and it?s uses, with testimonials from customers. Offer something your audience will find valuable, such as tips or exclusive content. This tells customers that you care about what is important to them.

TIP! Before you start marketing online, you first need to brainstorm a variety of methods you may want to implement. There are many options for free and low-cost ad techniques, such as on a blog or your social networking site.

Keep learning about the things you can use online. By keeping up with the newest trends on the Internet, you increase your chances of giving the public what it really wants.

You can get good, original, very high quality content for your website by interviewing professionals and authorities in your field. Video interviews can be very effective, but audio or textual interviews can work well too. These interviews will increase your reputation, particularly when you have interviews with high-profile people.

Before even thinking about getting your site ranked, you?ll need to build a terrific website. This must be your first step in starting an online business. When your site is set up correctly and works well to begin with, you save yourself effort down the line.

TIP! Customers most often respect, and appreciate honesty. By being honest, you will receive and retain the trust of your customers.

Always use clear, high quality pictures that show off the products your site is selling. Customers will like the fact that they get to clearly see what they are ordering. Create an area on your web site where buyers can submit their photographs of your product. Before and after shots can be an effective selling tactic.

You can measure conversion rates between site visitors and paying customers by using technology tools offered by different companies as a means of evaluating your online marketing campaigns. There are a wide variety of companies that provide tracking software to determine how many visitors a website has, along with the number of sales that those visits trigger.

You can boost your own authenticity and standing by offering space on your website for major institutions to advertise in. When customers recognize well-known brands next to the name of your business, they will be more likely to trust your business. Good advertisements increases the amount of traffic and transforms the site from a listing page to a website.

TIP! It may seem overwhelming to decide which direction your business and website should go in. Sort through the possibilities until a single answer has emerged.

Include words like ?simple? and ?easy? in your strategy. People avoid products that seem complicated, so adding descriptions like ?easy to order? or ?easy to use? will tempt customers to try your product. This is a wonderful way to increase traffic and sales.

Tracking events online, promotions, or different types of initiatives related to your brand is vital in creating successful Internet promotion strategies in the future. Look out for public opinions about your promotions and events on forums, blogs, etc. These people will feel like they are valued if you follow their advice.

Try and implement emotional descriptors in your ads as a means of selling more products. This will help you to build up your brand and make it easily recognizable to others. Use very descriptive words when you are trying to sell your product.

TIP! It?s very important to have 3rd party transaction security in place on your business website if you will be selling products. There are many trusted, impartial services.

Find some service or product that you can give free-of-charge to those who visit your site. You can increase the chance that a potential customer will investigate your site further once you have caught their eye with a free offer. A helpful example would be a tax calculator on a website about finances.

While you?re business may start off small, it is entirely on your shoulders to build on it in order to reach higher levels of success. Keep going once you?ve started! As you learn some crucial tips on the subject, you will be able to create different campaigns with relative ease. Before you know it, the traffic will come pouring in.

Is Bankruptcy The Solution To Your Debt Problems?

When times get tough financially and there doesn?t seem to be any other way of getting out of debt, many people that filing Bankruptcy is their only option. With over 1.2 million people filing in 2012, is this really the solution for everyone experiencing a financial storm? Perhaps more of an emphasis needs to be put on education ourselves about what bankruptcy is, how it works, and how it will affect us in the long run should we choose to that route.

There are various chapters of bankruptcies; it all depends on the individual. There are basically four bankruptcy filings. there?s a Chapter 7(liquidation), a Chapter 11(reorganization) , a Chapter 12(adjustments for farmers) and a Chapter 13( adjustments for individuals).

The chapter of filing that you choose depends on the person?s financial situation. The most common filing is Chapter 7. Married couples, companies and individuals are all eligible for a Chapter 7.

A debtor filing Chapter 7 is throwing everything away and starting over hoping for a clean slate. Once you file, an trustee will be appointed to maneuver the sale of the individual?s assets. This does not mean that you will lose everything you own, you might be able to keep some property such as your primary residence and personal items such as clothing and your vehicle. Once the debtor?s assets are sold, the trustee pays certain creditors a portion of the monies due.

Not all creditors receive monies; some creators must ?forgive? or ?discharge? the obligation. After you have?filed?a Chapter 7, and it is accomplished, you cannot file another bankruptcy for seven years. The debts that were not forgiven in the first bankruptcy, will not be forgiven in the next. The usual debts that will not be forgiven are alimony, child support and taxes. Student loans are seldom forgiven or discharged, as well, so if your debt falls into these categories, Chapter 7 bankruptcy is not your best option. You need a Chapter 13

Chapter 12 and 13 are basically the same, however, Chapter 12 deals with farmers with a regular income and Chapter 13 deals with?individuals?with a regular income. Your income has to be reliable and steady, and your debt has to be under $269,250 in unsecured debt and $809,750 in secured debt. Then, the debtor and the trustee developed a proposal for a repayment plan to all your creditors.

The court has the final say, as to where the funds go, and the repayment procedure can last for three to five years. The reason that debtor file for a Chapter 11 or a Chapter 13 is because they do not have to liquidate their assets and can keep everything. In addition, the debtor is only paying a percentage of what he or she owes, 30 to 50 cents on the dollar.

For a Chapter 11, the limit of indebtedness is not challenged. The Chapter 11 was originally intended for cooperation?s and businesses. The feature is basically the same as in the other bankruptcy chapters, but the trustee of the client in Chapter 11 is able to operate the debtors business. The business owner is now able to reconstruct his business, acquire financing and loans, reject and cancel contracts. The business owner is also protected against other liquidation threats. There is a reorganization of the business and personal assets and debts. A Chapter 11 filing may be over in a few months or in several years, depending on the complexity of the bankruptcy case.

Which chapter of bankruptcy you chose depends on your individual financial situation. Look into all your options, your financial dilemma may be fixed by debt counseling without the need for bankruptcy. Go to a debt counselor first; get a list of your income and expenses, as well as, your assets. If it is decided that bankruptcy is your only choice, than chose the chapter that suits you best.

PhoneSat: Smart, small and sassy

Dec. 28, 2012 ? The fast-paced proliferation and popularity of mobile devices here on Earth, like smartphones loaded with powerful operating systems, will find a new niche market- this time in space, thanks to NASA's trailblazing PhoneSat project.

To be rocketed into space early next year, PhoneSat is set to showcase use of lower cost, off-the-store-shelf, commercially available technology that enables space commerce, educational activities and citizen-exploration.

"PhoneSat demonstrates a philosophy of taking a creative idea, then building and testing that inspiration in a very rapid way?as opposed to long planning processes typical of larger spacecraft programs," said Andrew Petro, NASA program executive for Small Spacecraft Technology within the Space Technology Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. Petro said PhoneSat is an out of the box activity, one novel pathway being explored for small-sized satellites that, quite literally, "chip away" at lowering the cost of constructing future spacecraft. PhoneSat takes advantage of commercial products already imbued with speedy computing chips, lots of memory and ultra-tiny sensors like high-resolution cameras and navigation devices. That's a mix of attributes akin to what spacecraft require, Petro said. "Those are already built into a smart phone and that's what we're taking advantage of in the PhoneSat Project, which could ultimately lead to very low-cost satellite designs."

Non-traditional hardware

"From the programmatic level, we're exploring the use of non-traditional hardware and systems providers?outside of what you normally call the aerospace industries," said Bruce Yost, manager of the Small Spacecraft Technology program at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., home to a tight-knit team of engineers that conceived of and developed PhoneSat.

"PhoneSat is a way to find other ways to do some of our space missions in a non-traditional manner," Yost said.

There are three prototype satellites built for launch in the PhoneSat Project, each a "nanosatellite" that is a 4-inch cube and weighs just three pounds. The three PhoneSats are dubbed Alexander, Graham, and Bell.

PhoneSat 1.0 makes use of Nexus One smartphone technology made by HTC Corporation and Google's Android operating system.

A beta version of PhoneSat 2.0 joins the two battery-powered PhoneSat 1.0 spacecraft. PhoneSat 2.0 is built around an updated Nexus S smartphone made by Samsung Electronics which runs Google's Android operating system to provide a faster core processor, avionics and gyroscopes.

PhoneSat 2.0 has solar panels to enable longer-duration missions and a GPS receiver. It also has magnetorquer coils -- electro-magnets that interact with Earth's magnetic field -- as well as reaction wheels to actively control the satellite's orientation in space.

"We're providing a set of 3 satellites, inserted into a spring-loaded dispenser attached to the launch vehicle. They're stacked in there like a toaster," said Jim Cockrell, PhoneSat 1.0 project manager at NASA Ames.

An Orbital Sciences Corporation Antares booster, roaring skyward from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, Va., will eject the trio of PhoneSat spacecraft into low Earth orbit in 2013.

Creative and cost-saving approach

A creative and cost-saving approach in fabricating the solar paneled PhoneSat 2.0 is the use of Triangular Advanced Solar Cells, or TASC. Purchased from Spectrolab of Sylmar, Calif. at a modest price, the solar cells are "leftovers" from the manufacturing process of larger solar cells.

Cockrell said the cells are very small so it took more of them to cover the given surface area available on the PhoneSat. The cells offer high efficiency (27 percent) and, as they are a byproduct of the fabrication of larger cells, they are sold very cheaply -- about $250 for a quantity of 100, he noted.

Yet another cost-cutting avenue taken was the PhoneSat project's use of economical, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) brushless DC motors.

Cockrell said that the mass of the motors armatures provide all the momentum needed. "No external flywheel is attached, and they have built-in speed controllers," he said, "so the mechanical and electrical designs have minimum moving parts and are simple."

Because they are COTS hardware they are inexpensive. For comparison, Cockrell added, the least expensive, space-qualified, purpose-built attitude control system for CubeSats can cost two orders of magnitude more than the PhoneSat attitude control system made from COTS parts.

Popular Science magazine has chosen the NASA Ames Research Center's PhoneSat project as one of the winners in the Aerospace category for their "Best of What's New 2012" awards. PhoneSat is a demonstration project to build, launch and fly one of the lowest-cost, easiest-to-build satellites in space.

Technology demonstration

"The PhoneSat project is kind of a technology demonstration effort," said Jasper Wolfe, technical lead for attitude determination and control of the launch vehicle for the PhoneSat Project at NASA Ames.

During the PhoneSat Project's time in orbit, a global amateur radio community will be engaged, able to download and upload packets of data. Wolfe is anxious to see how they creatively utilize the Earth orbiting PhoneSats.

"Personally, one of the other benefits from PhoneSat is inspirational?demonstrating cool, cheap technologies that can inspire a lot of people to get involved in space," Wolfe said. "We want to keep up with all the technologies that are coming out and continually find new applications for technologies from other industries, particularly low-cost industries." NASA's Petro said the PhoneSat Project is a forerunner of things to come that can decrease the costs of future small spacecraft.

"It really is a revolution?and it's happening," Petro said. "My goal is to get in front of this wave and not be carried along by it?and see where NASA can make a contribution to the field."

Putin signs law banning American adoptions

Those already undergoing the costly process of adopting a child from Russia found out Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law barring any future adoptions, canceling the ones in progress. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Friday that bans Americans from adopting Russian children and imposes other measures in retaliation for new U.S. legislation meant to punish Russian human rights abusers.

The law, which has ignited outrage among Russian liberals and children's rights advocates, enters into force on Jan. 1 and is likely to strain U.S.-Russia relations.

As well as banning U.S. adoptions, it will also outlaw some non-governmental organizations that receive U.S. funding and impose a visa ban and asset freeze on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians abroad.

The law could block dozens of Russian children expected to be adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off one of the main international routes for Russian children to leave orphanages that are often dismal. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the United States, with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators and part of an increasingly confrontational stance by the Kremlin against the West.

Related: Americans may lose right to adopt Russian children

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Wednesday said that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia if the bill came into effect. On Thursday, he petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

John and Renee Thomas with their son, Jack, 7, who was adopted from Russia at the age of 3. Jack is hoping for his brother, Nikoly, now in a Russian orphanage, to join him in the United States.

Would-be adoptive parents in the United States are left hanging by Putin's signing of the bill, which was passed by Russian lawmakers last week.

Among them are John and Renee Thomas of Minnetonka, Minn., Kari Huus of NBC News reported.?The Thomases have already adopted Jack, 7, from Russia. When they found out he had a little brother, they began the process to try to adopt him, too. The wait has stretched to four years, and now the adoption may be in danger.?

"When Jack is asked about his family, he talks about his brother," John Thomas said. "He always asks, 'When is he coming home?' We just tell him we?re waiting for the call."

More: Adoption of little brother caught in US-Russia spat

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child.

Russian President Vladamir Putin has said he'll sign a proposed law that would halt adoptions of Russian children to Americans. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday repeated its opposition to the Russian measure.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to tie to the political aspects of our relationship," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said. "Additionally, we are deeply troubled by the provisions in the bill that would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners." ?

Critics of the bill left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.?

An online petition urging the Kremlin to scrap the bill garnered more than 100,000 Russian signatures.?

China launches Beidou satellite GPS services across AsiaPacific region

China has kicked off commercial and public services of its Beidou satellite navigation system across the Asia-Pacific rim in earnest, after finishing trials it started last year. Civilians in the region as far away as Australia are now able to navigate using the satellites to a distance of 30 feet and speeds as low as 0.5 mph -- comparable to (WAAS-less) GPS, according to officials. Currently the nation has 16 navigation satellites aloft along with four experimental models, and expects to provide worldwide coverage by 2020 when it'll have as many as 40 additional units in orbit, according to China Daily. China launched the project in 2000 to avoid reliance on the US GPS system, and will join that service, Russia's GLONASS and eventually Galileo in the EU at the sat nav party. Two new orchid species found

One of the world's newest orchid species is also its most delicate, with tiny white flowers smaller than a dime. Yet the flower finds its home amid boulders near the banks of rushing streams in Cuba's remote eastern mountains.

The orchid is one of two new species identified by botanists in Cuba, a hotbed for orchids ? the largest and most diverse plant family in the world. The islands of the Caribbean have more the 25,000 species of orchids tucked into their forests and rivers.

The new species was named Tetramicra riparia, a nod to its discovery along stony streams in the mountains of Baracoa, one of the rainiest and least explored areas in Cuba, ?ngel Vale, a researcher at the University of Vigo in Spain, said in a statement. The plant has an unusually broad, sturdy base: Its pedicel is almost four times as large as its column, Vale and his co-authors report.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. The year's top ancient mysteries (and missteps)

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

    2. Unselfish brain cells found in monkeys
    3. Starvation didn't wipe out saber-toothed cats
    4. Two new orchid species found

The second new orchid, from the western tip of the island, dwarfs its neighbor in size. The flower's showy purple and green petals are similar to a daffodil in appearance, spreading more than 2.5 inches, with up to 20 blooms on one plant.

Like many orchids, the flower, dubbed Encyclia navarroi, is epiphytic, meaning it grows on other plants for support, but not for nutrients. Along the western coast, the species preferred to perch on plumeria and ficus, the researchers discovered.

Both new species are deceit pollinators, Vale said, enticing bees to spread their pollen without a reward. "Contrary to most plants, many orchids do not produce nectar or other substances to compensate insects and birds that visit them," he said.

Vale and his colleagues are studying orchids throughout the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico) to reconstruct their evolutionary history and analyze the effect of pollinators in their development. One of the mysteries they aim to solve is whether deceit orchids have greater diversity than other nectar-producing species.

"Despite the fact that T. riparia's flowers have a complete central petal, just like other species that make up a subgenre endemic to Cuba; the way they grow is very similar to a more widespread group that seems to have diverged on the neighboring island of Hispaniola," Vale said. "Our work provides molecular evidence of the greater relationship of T. riparia with these species on the neighboring island."

The findings were detailed in the October 2012 issue of the journal Systematic Botany and the April 2012 issue of the journal Annales Botanici Fennici.

Integrative Medicine: Bacteria in gut studied to examine obesity link ...

? The Sacramento Bee

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to lose weight, you are not alone ? the United States has the highest rate of obesity in the world.

In 2010, more than 35 percent of American adults were obese as well as 17 percent of American kids, and it's estimated that 50 percent of adults will be obese by 2030. Obesity has been attributed to many things, including our overconsumption of processed grains, sweetened foods and sodas. Our sedentary lifestyles don't help, either.

However, scientists are exploring the possibility that the bacteria hanging out in your gut may also contribute to your expanding waistline, and perhaps to your inability to lose weight. The health of the intestines, in particular the composition of the trillions of bacteria that live in your gut, may be key players in everything from dysfunction of your immune system to insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity, depression, skin disorders and autoimmune disease. In fact, many scientists consider that the microbes in the gut constitute their own organ system in the body known as the microbiome. The human microbiome consists of all of the bacteria, viruses and other organisms that live communally in the gut. There are 10 times as many organisms in the gut as there are human cells in the body, and these organisms are subject to change, especially with changes in our diet.

So how might bacteria in the gut affect your weight? Research suggests that organisms in our intestines have a significant impact on how fats in our food are metabolized, absorbed and stored. The first data to suggest a connection between the health of the gut and the risk of obesity was published in 2004, and since then more than 100 articles have been published trying to elucidate the mechanism behind this.

An imbalance of harmful bacteria in the gut can secrete substances known as endotoxins that can incite inflammation and contribute to changes in hormones that subsequently lead to weight gain. In a recent study in China, scientists identified an obesity-linked bacteria known as Enterobacter from a morbidly obese adult male; when that bacterium was eliminated from his gut, he lost nearly 30 percent of his body weight. The researchers then fed this same Enterobacter to a group of mice; they developed obesity and insulin resistance from this exposure.

What leads to an increase in harmful bacteria such as Enterobacter? The composition of organisms in the intestines is affected by multiple things including foods we eat, the use of antibiotics, chronic ingestion of acid-reducing medications and stress. In fact, bacteria in the gut can change within 24 hours of a change in our diets.

And how do you keep your gut healthy and happy? Start by avoiding processed grains and sugars, which can promote the growth of harmful bacteria, and switch to whole, unprocessed grains as well as fermented foods. Fermented foods like yogurt and sauerkraut contain healthy bacteria known as probiotics, which help to replenish healthy gut bacteria, and most of us no longer eat these foods with any regularity.

Foods like garlic, leeks, and onions contain substances known as prebiotics, which also help to feed and foster the growth of those healthy bacteria. Sometimes a probiotic supplement is also needed to help restore gut health, and some people may even need more specific treatment to reduce levels of harmful bacteria in the intestines.

And of course, don't forget to manage your stress, get plenty of sleep, keep up your exercise and watch your portion sizes to lose weight. But also stay tuned for more information about this new area of research that may provide exciting new ways for you to help reduce your weight in the coming years.

A happy, healthy New Year to you!
