Rookie firefighter sees own house burn in Colo.

Rookie firefighter Emily Franklin battled her first blaze this week and among the casualties was her own house.

The fire, one of several wildfires plaguing Colorado, turned her childhood home into cinders and reduced her car to a metal skeleton in the driveway.

"This is my first fire and it was my own home," Franklin, 18, told ABC News."Great way to kick off a career."

Franklin actually watched her own house going up in smoke while working with her colleagues to help save the town from the fire.

The rookie firefighter sprang into action while home and seeing flames spread from house to house in her Estes Park neighborhood, incinerating trees in its wake. She raced around with her garden hose, shouting for neighbors to get out of their houses and turn their hoses on.

Once firefighters arrived, she drove down to the command center with her gear and took assignments dowsing other flames.

"I look through the trees and see fire going under our deck, and I was like, 'I think that's my house,'" She said. "It goes up, and I was like, 'That's my house!"

Still, she kept working, and spent the rest of the day directing traffic and taking other assignments.

The Estes Park fire is one of several wildfires that raging in Colorado. The largest, the Waldo Canyon fire, has destroyed hundreds of home and scorched 18,500 acres despite the efforts of more than 1,000 firefighters trying to bring it under control.

Rookie Firefighter Sees Own House Burn as She Protects Town (ABC News)Nevertheless, Franklin said she's lucky no one in her family was hurt.

"I guess anything can happen in a matter of 10 minutes," she said. "Getting out was the most important thing, so that's what we did."

She described the firefighters' work as "truly amazing."

"I think without firefighters, the entire town of Estes would be gone," she said.

Gleason Level of Prostate Cancer | Internet Contents

During the event of a prostate biopsy and the confirmed presence of a prostate cancer, the Gleason Score is judged based on the appearance of the prostate cancer cells under the microscope. A Gleason score is therefore awarded with the higher the Gleason level of the prostate, the severity of the malignancy of the cancer cells.

A Gleason level of a prostate cancer goes as follows:

Gleason Grade 1 shows the early stages of the cancer cells. Under the microscope, these cancer prostate cells would closely resemble a normal (if not healthy) prostate tissue. There are no deformities nor lumps, the prostate glands are small, formed naturally, and closely packed. Because under an inexperienced eye, this prostate cancer cells will be almost normal, this Gleason level of prostate cancer is harder to detect.

Gleason Grade 2 shows the tissue that still has well formed glands. But they would be noticeably larger and could appear a little bit swollen and have more tissue between them. At this stage of Gleason level of prostate cancer, this is still considered early.

Gleason Grade 3 may look the same as Gleason grade 2, although there would be some parts considerably darker. Under a powerful microscope or under high magnification, Gleason grade 3 will show the prostate cancer cells invading the surrounding tissues. Though still recognizable, the giveaway of this Gleason level would be the dark spots.

Gleason Grade 4 is already an escalated condition of Gleason grade 3. There would yet be recognizable glands but the prostate cancer cells would already be very visible. Many of the prostate cancer cells would by this time invade most of the surrounding tissues.

Gleason Grade 5 is the worst prostate condition. On Gleason grade 5, the prostate tissues won?t have any recognizable glands. Under the microscope they would only show tissues upon tissues of malignant prostate cancer cells.

The data shows that the higher the Gleason level of the prostate cancer, the more aggressive the cancer cells are. Knowing the Gleason level of prostate cancer staging, medical specialist can determine which therapy paths to take and if more comprehensive techniques like radical prostatectomy should be employed.

Identifying the Gleason level of the prostate cancer succeeds the prostate biopsy procedure. By extracting a tissue samples from different parts of the prostate, the medical specialist can determine the Gleason level of prostate and can recommend you the best option for treatment.

Sky-divers drop from blimp to demo Google Glass eyewear

3 hrs.

Sergey Brin turned up at the Google I/O keynote, and revealed that a trio of basejumpers were hanging out in a blimp overhead. Brin's instructions: Jump out of the airship, land on the roof of the Moscone Center, and deliver a box containing a pair of the augmented-reality?glasses.?

Because this didn't seem complicated enough, Brin asked for mountaineers to rappel down the walls of the center, then hand off the package to cyclists, who rode into the auditorium.?

It was a pretty crazy stunt, though one that didn't reveal much about Google Glass except that it stays on during extreme sports, will come in a variety of styles, and weighs less than a standard pair of sunglasses.

It was also revealed that Google will allow attendees of this week's conference to pre-order a version of Google Glass for $1,500. This model will be a rough edition, not the final product, and is intended for serious developers only.

Benefits Associated With Building Google Targeted ... - Web Doctor 2.0

Posted on June 27th, 2012 Web Doctor

It will take a variety of traffic to make an online world, however, if when building your internet site you pursue some purpose, such as replacing the same with online presence, supporting your small business online, creating wealth, speaking from the feelings to public, etc., you must recognize that its not all traffic you make to your web page would work as well for obtaining your goals.

So, on this page I would really like us to take a look in the kind of traffic that does something more than increasing your site traffic statistics, and also at Google traffic especially. Initially let?s require a brief glance at the different sources the traffic could possibly be directed to your web site: search engines like yahoo, internet sites, blogs and forums, exchanging links, return visitors, recommendations visitors, banner and also other advertising visitors.

Though online sources are vastly different greatly, all of the traffic forwarded to your online site may be divided into two basic categories: targeted and untargeted. This is one example for showing the main difference: create a person, who may have a half an hour time in between two meetings and contains to accomplish some waiting in such a public spot as large store. This individual really doesn?t have any intention of coming to a purchases, but has serious amounts of kill and entertain him or herself.

He gets into and wonders round the shops no matter what you can choose from, not much interested in the merchandise, but rather in the operation of passing some time and entertaining. This could be an illustration of untargeted traffic.

However, if you would imagine a person, who goes shopping having a set of items to buy and cash as part of his or her pocket, it is an illustration of targeted visitors. They are identified capable to buy things. Moreover, they may be searching for items to buy, read, subscribe or attend to.

(AP) ? The singing former soldier whose battle injury claims were questioned sang his last song on "America's Got Talent."

Timothy Michael Poe crooned George Strait's "The Chair" before he was cut from the NBC talent competition on Tuesday's Las Vegas-set installment.

The 35-year-old country singer appeared earlier this month on "America's Got Talent" and said he was injured by a grenade in Afghanistan in 2009, but Minnesota National Guard records didn't support his story.

"I don't know that he holds up to other singers on this show at all," said judge Howie Mandel while evaluating Poe.

Poe won over the crowd and celebrity judges during his initial "America's Got Talent" audition that aired earlier this month with a moving story about how he blocked a grenade blast to save his buddies. The National Guard said records show Poe wasn't injured in combat in Afghanistan, and he has been criticized since he made his injury claims on the show.

Poe, who now lives in Texas, later told WFAA-TV in Dallas that he believed he was telling the truth but doesn't know what is real. He also provided a photo to "America's Got Talent" of a soldier that he passed off as himself. Poe's fianc?e, Carrie Morris, said he accidentally submitted the photo of Staff Sgt. Norman Bone in Afghanistan in 2006 because he was rushed.

Poe's dismissal on Tuesday's episode was matter of fact and appeared not to be related to the controversy surrounding his claims. The edition of "America's Got Talent" featuring Poe competing for a spot on the show in Las Vegas was filmed last month before his injury claims were scrutinized.

Linkin Park's LIVING THINGS: The Personal Album For The Masses

'[Our songs] can be felt on so many different levels,' Chester Bennington says of LP's latest, in stores Tuesday.
By James Montgomery

Linkin Park
Photo:

When Linkin Park began the process of making LIVING THINGS, they weren't sure where the journey would take them ... after all, the last time they headed down this path — on 2010's A Thousand Suns — their voyage ended up in decidedly dystopian territory: It was, for all intents and purposes, an album that sounded like a sonic apocalypse, and dealt with similarly dark themes.

But to be honest, that didn't dissuade them. Because, as they've discovered over their 15-year career, creative uncertainty is practically par for the course. It truly seems that Linkin Park don't know what kind of album they're making until it's done. And even then, sometimes they're still not sure.

"When we're writing a record, there's a misconception [that] maybe [we're] thinking of something, and planning a goal, trying to imagine a song and then making a song," Mike Shinoda told MTV News during "MTV First: Linkin Park." "That's not how we work. We basically sit down with instruments and try to pull it down out of the air. You go into it without thinking, and then you see what comes out. And in the process of making the last record, a lot of what was popping out was about nuclear war, stuff like that. I think, having gotten that out of our system, this record, when we sat down to write songs, it was always personal, and it kept happening."

And while most of the advance press about LIVING THINGS (in stores Tuesday) seemed to focus on LP ditching the political for the personal, that may not actually be the case. Because Linkin Park keep coming back to the idea of uncertainty ... to them, the songs on their new album are meant to be taken however their fans choose to take them. Sure, they may be drawing from the personal, but they're meant for the masses. Pure and simple. And though they've changed plenty over the years, that aspect of their music remains steadfastly, immutably unaltered.

"You can look at a song like 'CASTLE OF GLASS,' which for me, has one of the most interesting opposing points of view," Chester Bennington said. "When Mike was talking about the lyrics, at one point he had said, 'You know, it's kind of like finding yourself as this broken part of this big machine, and feeling like you're not part of that, or trying to find your place in the bigger scheme of things.' And that can mean a solider coming home from war, and trying to fit back into society, or a person getting out of prison, or whatever.

"And here I am, envisioning this big, beautiful glass castle on a hill, and, like, unicorns. I'm thinking like 'Yeah, if you zoom in, I'm this little broken part of this castle that no one knows about, and I may seem like flawed and not important, but when you back up and look at the big picture, you're part of this really beautiful thing that keeps you together," he continued. "And it was a really interesting twist; I think a lot of our lyrics can be taken from multiple perspectives, depending on what you want the song to be about ... they can be felt on so many different levels."

Poll: One-quarter uncommitted in White House race

WASHINGTON (AP) ? They shrug at President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. They're in no hurry to decide which one to support in the White House race. And they'll have a big say in determining who wins the White House.

One-quarter of U.S. voters are persuadable, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll, and both Obama and Romney will spend the next four months trying to convince these fickle, hard-to-reach individuals that only he has what it takes to fix an ailing nation.

It's a delicate task. These voters also hate pandering.

"I don't believe in nothing they say," says Carol Barber of Iceland, Ky., among the 27 percent of the electorate that hasn't determined whom to back or that doesn't have a strong preference about a candidate.

Like many uncommitted voters, the 66-year-old Barber isn't really paying attention to politics these days. She's largely focused on her husband, who just had a liver transplant, and the fact that she had to refinance her home to pay much of his health bill. "I just can't concentrate on it now," she says before adding, "If there were somebody running who knows what it's like to struggle, that would be different."

John Robinson, a 49-year-old general contractor from Santa Cruz, Calif., is paying a bit more attention, but is just as turned off by both candidates.

"I'm just bitter about everybody. They just keep talking and wavering," said Robinson, a conservative who backed the GOP nominee in 2008, Arizona Sen. John McCain, but is undecided between Obama and Romney. "There's nothing I can really say that's appealing about either one of them."

To be sure, many of the 1-in-4 voters who today say they are uncommitted will settle on a candidate by Election Day, Nov. 6.

Until then, Obama and Romney will spend huge amounts of time and money trying to win their votes, especially in the most competitive states that tend to swing between Republicans and Democrats each presidential election. Obama and Romney face the same hurdle, winning over wavering voters without alienating core supporters they need to canvass neighborhoods and staff telephone banks this fall to help make sure their backers actually vote.

"It presents an interesting challenge to the campaigns," said Steve McMahon, a founding partner in Purple Strategies, a bipartisan crisis management firm. "Moving to the middle means winning these voters, but it also means creating problems with your base."

Obama has sought to straddle both the left and the middle by announcing policies that expand access to contraception and allow immigrants brought illegally to the United States as children to be exempted from deportation and granted work permits if they applied.

Both issues are popular with his core supporters and centrist voters. The president also is promoting a list of what he says are bipartisan measures that would help homeowners, veterans, teachers and police officers, and he accuses Republicans of causing gridlock by refusing to act on them. It's a pitch intended for independent-minded voters frustrated by inaction in Washington.

Romney has broadened his tea party-infused message from the GOP primary and softened his tone as he looks to attract voters from across the political spectrum.

He abandoned the harsh immigration rhetoric on Thursday when he pledged to address illegal immigration "in a civil but resolute manner" while outlining plans to overhaul the green card system for immigrants with families and end immigration caps for their spouses and minor children. In doing so, he risked inflaming conservatives who make up the base of the Republican Party.

Overall, the poll found that among registered voters, 47 percent say they will vote for the president and 44 percent for Romney, a difference that is not statistically significant.

Those totals include soft support, though, meaning people who lean toward a candidate as well as those who said they could change their minds before November. The poll showed that these persuadable voters are equally apt to lean toward Obama, Romney, or neither, with about one-third of them in each camp.

The survey also showed that these voters are more likely than others to say they distrust both Romney and Obama on the major issues. They are far more likely to think the outcome of the election won't make a big difference on the economy, unemployment, the federal budget deficit or health care.

Party politics and wedge issues have dubious weight with this group. The poll found more independents fall into this category than partisans. The partisans who are persuadable are more likely to be in the ideological middle than either liberal Democrats or conservative Republicans. Seventeen percent of persuadables say they consider themselves supporters of the tea party.

The poll also found that demographically, they are more likely to be members of Generation X (between the ages of 30 and 49) than other registered voters. Many, 71 percent, have not graduated college. They are a bit more likely to have lower incomes than all registered voters. Fifty-two percent of persuadables have incomes below $50,000, compared with 44 percent of all voters.

On other characteristics ? gender, religious preference and race ? they're split similarly to other registered voters.

The Associated Press-GfK Poll was conducted June 14-18, 2012 by GfK Roper Public Affairs and Corporate Communications. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,007 adults nationwide, including 878 registered voters and 228 persuadable voters. Results for the full sample have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points. For registered voters it is 4.2 points and for persuadable voters it's plus or minus 8.3 points.

Israel government asks Supreme Court to delay the razing of West Bank settlement outpost

The Israeli government has asked the Supreme Court to delay the dismantling of an illegal Jewish settlement enclave in the West Bank for seven months.

The government had pledged to evict the two dozen families living in the Givat Assaf settlement outpost by July 1.

The outpost was built without official authorization and was constructed on privately held Palestinian land. Israel considers this illegal, even as it approves construction on other captured territory.

In its petition to the court, the government says it has "significant new information" about Givat Assaf that requires exploring. It did not elaborate.

But the Maariv newspaper reported Sunday that the military has discovered old documents that contradict Palestinian claims to owning the land. The Palestinians want all of the West Bank for their future state.

67 Year Old Fitness Fan Comments on Senior Health and Fitness ...

First of all, this is almost certainly not the absolute best elliptical on the market, but I have decided to review it here for three major reasons:

1. The Weslo Momentum CT 5.0 Elliptical has among the highest user reviews whereever I find it being sold.

2. It is readily available as it is sold at most Walmart stores and in other venues, including online.

3. It is within most people's budget for exercise equipment as it is presently available for just under $300.00.

icon icon

One warning: I write this blog mainly for senior exercise enthusiasts and assume that most readers are not exercise fanatics but are primarily interested in doing regular moderate exercise to remain healthy. If you are someone who wants to train for marathons and do extreme workouts on an elliptical each day, you will need a higher end model.

That having been said, I would like to add that elliptical trainers are excellent for senior exercisers due to their low-impact nature.

Now, about the Weslo Momentum CT 5.0 Elliptical.

Customer Satisfaction:

While I do not own one, I have tried one out and was personally satisfied with the operation, structure, and features. In looking at customer reviews, I found that the Weslo Momentum CT 5.0 Elliptical consistently gets the highest ratings from its owners.

Description

The Weslo Momentum CT 5.0 Elliptical has workout apps which make it simple to adjust your workout intensity and can be a significant tool if your goal is to get fit and/or lose weight fast. Benefits and drawbacks connected with flat roofing

Flat roofs really possess a small slope to prevent build-up of rain water. Rain water may well cause harm to your roof including leakages, cracks, as well as rusting.

You can expect roofs that do experience a problem with "pooling" or "ponding" of water, to deteriorate that much more quickly. Polished wood, embellished ceilings or maybe wall surfaces may be spoiled if your flat roofing does start to leak as a result of inadequate drainage.

A flat roof demands significantly less material and labour so is quite a bit cheaper to install than a pitched rooftop but if it is not regularly maintained it may cost more in repairs in the long run.

Snow can accumulate on this form of roof structure instead of dropping off and flat roofs fall in more often than others beneath the weight. In britain where we're not usually subjected to heavy snow fall like several other places around the world this occurs much less usually.

A flat roof structure will often make a good space to setup an eco-friendly roof or even install solar cells.

Though Flat rooftops are generally not well suited for our summer although can reduce energy cost in winters. It can make the household even warmer as it absorbs more of the sun's heat compared to a pitched roof top.

Flat roofs might have a shorter life span as compared with a pitched roof based on precisely what materials are used.

Sheer roofs normally form awkward wall surfaces that can not be used within the residence. Flat versions eliminate this issue. Flat roofs tend to make potential flooring additions more economical and simpler, if needed.

The materials now utilised by the vast majority of credible flat roofing companies have vastly improved and at present are usually tough and highly technical. These kinds of materials tend to be routinely used alongside insulating material as well as other products such as roof top lighting, fascias, cladding and rainwater goods to optimize the efficiency and life expectancy of newly installed rooftops. If you're going to add roofing to your dwelling or wooden garden shed, be certain to consider all the choices and get guidance from a professional roofer.

Juror: Sandusky's lack of emotion was 'confirmation'

In an exclusive interview, juror Joshua Harper tells TODAY's Lester Holt that the decision to convict Jerry Sandusky hinged on the credibility of his accusers and the testimony of independent witnesses.

By NBC News and msnbc.com staff

A juror in the Jerry Sandusky trial said Saturday that the look on the former?Penn State football coach's face as the guilty verdicts were announced was "confirmation" that they had made the right decision.

Joshua Harper told TODAY that?Sandusky had shown "no real emotion, just kind of accepting because he knew it was true," he added.

Sandusky, 68, was convicted Friday of 45 counts of child sexual abuse and faces a minimum sentence of 60 years in prison, NBC News reported.

The former longtime defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team had denied all 48 counts alleging that he abused 10 boys over 15 years.

Investigations will continue in the Sandusky case related to how Penn State handled the case, and some officials are facing perjury charges. NBC's Michael Isikoff, Ron Allen, and Legal Analyst Wes Oliver join MSNBC's Ed Schultz to discuss the details of the case as well as community reaction to the verdict.

Two grand jury reports accused him of having used his connection to one of the nation's premier college football programs to "groom" the boys, whom he met through his Second Mile charity for troubled children.

Harper told TODAY that the jurors?"were on the same page" when they began their deliberations and had focused on "the facts and determining credibility."

MSNBC's Ed Schultz talks with Jeff Herman, an attorney who specializes in representing sexual abuse victims, about the difficulties the victims in the Sandusky case would have had in stepping forward with allegations.

He said the men who testified that they were abused appeared to be telling the truth.

"I think there were a couple that I felt [were] very credible. I mean, it's hard to judge character on the stand, because?you don't know these kids, but most were very credible, I would say all," Harper told TODAY.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola speaks outside the courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., after his client, Jerry Sandusky, was found guilty of sexually abusing children.

He added that the fact that they all told similar stories about Sandusky was "very convincing."

Harper said they had not convicted Sandusky of rape over the incident witnessed by former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary -- who said he had "no doubt" that Sandusky engaged in anal sex with a boy in a Penn State shower -- because McQueary "did not see any actual penetration."

Ghosts of Sandusky's dreams haunt home where charity was born

"We did not have the evidence that that very?first charge happened," Harper said. "We were in agreement ...?that we could not convict him of that first count."

Sandusky was acquitted on two other counts as well -- one an indecent assault charge involving "Victim 6". The man testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out."

The other acquittal was an indecent assault charge related to "Victim 5", who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower.

The jury had worked "very well" together,?he added, discussing misgivings about some parts of the case and discussing "inconsistencies." "We were patient," he said.

Screen Shot 2012-06-22 at 10.58.07 AMAs a father it's amazingly hard to play video games. First, I'm not good at them anymore - try practicing sniping n00bs when you're trying to feed a 3-year-old something other than Goldfish crackers - and second I can't play them in their full aural glory because they sound like WWII carefully mixed with a terrible accident at a jackhammer factory. In short, they're too hard and too loud. Obviously I can fix the "too hard" part by only playing Yoshi's Story. But what about the "too loud" part? I'm glad to say the Turtle Beach XP500s have taken care of things.

Ekanpou Enewaridideke brings back the book to Oyangbene ...

It was a great day last week for Delta State born writer and activist, Ekanpou Enewaridideke as he unveiled his new five books in Oyangbene community of Burukutu Local Government Area of the State.

The versatile award winning author, who also saddles his other social and community responsibilities as the national President of Ijaw People Congress was the proud winner of the 2004 Isidore Okpewho prize for literature with his book, The Road to Ken Saro Wiwa.

Last week?s public presentation of the five new books went further to authenticate Enewaridideke as one of the committed sons of the Niger Delta, who like his patron peers; Gabriel Okra, late Ken Saro Wiwa, Tanure Ojaide, Isidore Okpewho, John Peppe Clark and Nimmo Bassey, who adopted the power of creative writing and expression as a veritable platform of engaging and confronting social, political and environmental injustices.

The? books unveiled were: A Sail in the Dark, novel, The Wanted Man in Camp Four, play, You Must Leave Ekameta Tomorrow, play, A Family of Imbeciles, play and Sandbanks in the River Forcados,a collection of poems that was named the first runner-up of? Tanure Ojaide?s prize for poetry in 2004.

Unveiling the five books in Oyangbene community, the apparently excited writer says :?In a world rendered perpetually disorderly, chaotic, absurd, precipitous and ideologically bloated by our own actions, we need a deliberate reconnection with the primordial simple past, generational regeneration and paradigm shift. This is?only?available in creative works fired by this consciousness. This is what I have labored into my new books.?

Ekanpou Enwaridideke saw the unveiling of his books in Oyangbene community as a viable grassroots springboard for the realization of the much-coveted generational paradigm shift adding that the unveiling would inspire the grassroots people to develop the culture of reading and writing which is a clear propagation of President Good luck Jonathan?s campaign of BRING BACK THE BOOK.

(AP) ? A video emerged Friday showing more than a dozen bloodied corpses in Syria, some of them piled on top of each other and in military uniforms, in what the government said was a "massacre" by rebels in the northern province of Aleppo.

The circumstances of the killings were not immediately clear. But in the video ? which The Associated Press could not independently verify ? the narrator said the dead were members of the "shabiha," or pro-regime gunmen.

Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said terrorist groups had killed and mutilated at least 25 people in Daret Azzeh, a rebel-held area in the Aleppo countryside. The government refers to rebels as terrorists.

"The terrorist groups in Daret Azzeh committed a brutal massacre against the citizens, whom they had kidnapped earlier in the day," SANA said.

The report said at least 25 people were killed, but others were missing.

It was not clear whether the men were killed execution-style or died in clashes. An activist in the area, Mohammed Saeed, said rebels regularly collect the bodies of the dead from the government side and dump them by the side of the road so troops can come and collect them later.

Both sides in the conflict have become increasingly militarized as the country veers toward civil war and an internationally brokered peace plan has failed to take hold. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began in March last year.

The city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, has been relatively quiet, but towns and villages around it have witnessed intense clashes between troops and opposition fighters. Daret Azzeh has endured intense government shelling over the past two weeks as Assad's forces try to regain areas taken by rebels. The violence continued Friday, as Syrian troops shelled the area and used helicopter gunships in their attacks on rebels, Saeed said.

"The army has been trying to push through for days without success," Saeed said.

Government troops have been launching a major offensive on many areas throughout the country over the past two weeks in an attempt to regain ground captured by the opposition. Attacks have mostly concentrated on Aleppo, the suburbs of the capital Damascus as well as the central province of Homs, southern region of Daraa and the eastern city of Deir el-Zour.

On Friday, activists reported that thousands of people rallied to protest the regime following afternoon prayers in different parts of Syria, including Daraa, Aleppo, the northeastern region of Hassakeh and Damascus. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops opened fire at protesters in Aleppo and the Damascus neighborhood of Mazzeh. Several casualties were reported.

The uprising in Syria began with regular anti-regime protests, although they have lost momentum as the revolt turns into an armed insurgency.

Also Friday, the Observatory said four senior army officers have defected from the regime. The group provided a video purporting to show two brigadier generals and two colonels who declared they were joining the opposition.

The group said the defections came Thursday ? the same day a Syria fighter pilot flew his MiG-21 warplane to neighboring Jordan, where he was given asylum.

Thousands of soldiers have abandoned the regime, but most are low-level conscripts. The Free Syria Army, the loosely linked group of rebel forces, is made up largely of defectors.
