Indian Chicken Curry ? An Easy Crock Pot Curry Chicken Recipe

Indian Inspired Crock Pot Curry Chicken

Indian Chicken Curry is a recipe I made up after having something similar in Miami. This Indian curry recipe has a bunch of ingredients but they all get tossed into the crock-pot or slow cooker, so it?s super easy to make. The flavors are intoxicating together so if you have never tried Indian Curry you have to trust me and try this one.

I love the taste of curry but never really make Indian style dishes at home. I cook a lot of Thai curry but Indian Curry Chicken isn?t something I usually make. I recently visited Miami and went to an amazing outdoor art exhibit called the Wynwood Walls. Artists from all over the world have painted these giant outdoor walls in sort of a graffiti style. It?s a great place to stroll through and admire all of the artwork. Among the walls is a restaurant called the Wynwood Kitchen & Bar. It?s a place where many young and hip artists types like to meet for drinks and a nibble.

The menu is very eclectic and the food was tasty but nothing earth shattering.? I did however enjoy a clay pot curry chicken dish that inspired me to try my own take on it at home in my crock-pot.? So this is my Indian Inspired Crock Pot Curry Chicken.? It turned out so delicious. My husband loved it so much he told me he would marry me all over again. My kids even enjoyed it. There may be a bunch of ingredients you don?t have handy but they are easy to find in the store. It also might seem like there are a ton of ingredients in this dish but it?s actually a one pot meal so once you get it all in the slow cooker you are done.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole fryer chicken cut into pieces
  • 3 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup of flour
  • 2 potatoes cut in large cubes
  • 3 celery stalks, chopped
  • 4 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 onions, sliced
  • 6 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2-3 teaspoons of yellow curry
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ginger
  • 1 (13 oz) can of coconut milk (not cream of coco)
  • 1 (15 oz) jar of Mango, Apricot or Peach Preserve (your choice)
  • 1 envelope of Onion Gravy mix or onion soup mix
  • Salt and fresh ground black pepper

?Directions:

Indian Inspired Crock Pot Curry Chicken

Season the chicken on both sides with salt and pepper. Then dredge lightly in flour.

Indian Inspired Crock Pot Curry Chicken

Add oil to frying pan and brown chicken on both sides in batches. There is no need to cook completely. It will finish cooking in the crock-pot.

Indian Inspired Crock Pot Curry Chicken

Add the butter and all the vegetables to the crock-pot. Top with the chicken, spices, preserve and coconut milk.

Cover and cook on high for 3 hours or on low for 5-6 hours.

Serve over rice with some chopped fresh cilantro as a garnish.

Cook?s Notes:

If you like it spicy you can add some red pepper flakes or fresh chopped chilies.

I sometimes add two cubed potatoes to this recipe. Be sure to cut them in large pieces so they will hold up during the cooking time.

I like to also steam some broccoli and serve it on the side with this dish.

Computer virus briefly hits Iran's oil industry

(AP) ? A senior Iranian military official says Iran's oil industry was briefly affected by a powerful computer virus that has unprecedented data-snatching capabilities and can eavesdrop on computer users.

Gholam Reza Jalali, who heads an Iranian military unit in charge of fighting sabotage, said Wednesday that Iranian experts had found and defeated the "Flame" virus.

Jalali told state radio Wednesday that the oil industry was the only governmental body affected and all problems had been resolved.

(AP) ? Imagine a tiny snake robot crawling through your body, helping a surgeon identify diseases and perform operations.

It's not science fiction. Scientists and doctors are using the creeping metallic tools to perform surgery on hearts, prostate cancer, and other diseased organs. The snakebots carry tiny cameras, scissors and forceps, and even more advanced sensors are in the works. For now, they're powered by tethers that humans control. But experts say the day is coming when some robots will roam the body on their own.

"It won't be very long before we have robots that are nanobots, meaning they will actually be inside the body without tethers," said Dr. Michael Argenziano, the Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Argenziano was involved with some of the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration clinical trials on robotic heart surgery more than 10 years ago. Now he says snake robots have become a commonly used tool that gives surgeons a whole new perspective.

"It's like the ability to have little hands inside the patients, as if the surgeon had been shrunken, and was working on the heart valve," he said.

But Argenziano and experts in robotics say the new creations work best when they're designed for very specific tasks. "The robot is a tool. It is no different in that sense than a scalpel. It's really a master-slave device," he said.

Howie Choset has been researching and building robots, particularly snake robots, at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University for years.

Choset believes that his snake robot and others like it help reduce medical costs by making complex surgeries faster and easier. Choset says his new design is smaller and more flexible than earlier models: The diameter of the head is less than the size of a dime.

The size of surgical robots allows surgeons to operate with far less damage to the body, helping the patient heal faster. For example, instead of opening the entire chest up during heart surgery, a small incision is made, and the robot crawls inside to the proper spot.

Dr. Ashutosh Tewari of Cornell University Medical Center has used robotic tools to perform thousands of prostate operations. He said the precision of the tiny robotic tool is vital not just to cutting out cancerous tumors, but to seeing exactly what nerves to leave intact.

Tewari said he's most excited about the potential for surgical robots to do things humans can't do. He said the variety of sensors available for surgical robots keeps expanding, even as they get smaller. He said they may one day be able to test chemicals or blood in the body, or even the electrical connections in nerves.

Argenziano noted that robots aren't a magic cure. "The robot is good at certain things and it's not good at other things," he said. Some studies have found that the cost effectiveness of surgical robots varies greatly. In smaller hospitals, the high cost of purchasing and maintaining a robot may not make sense.

Choset has also built larger snake robots designed for search and rescue, or just exploration. They can climb poles or trees and then look around through a camera in the head, and slither through places humans can't reach.

"We sent our snake robots into these caves off the coast of the Red Sea to look for evidence of ancient Egyptian ships," he said. "To me archaeology is like search and rescue, but everyone's been dead for 5,000 years," reducing the pressure.

Another expert at Carnegie Mellon stresses that there's still an enormous gap between humans and even the most high-tech robots. Manuela Velosa noted that robots have been built that excel at one or two tasks ? but not at the variety of tasks humans perform without even thinking.

Velosa has been building robots that ask humans for help when they don't know what to do, as well as teams of robots that play soccer against each other. Sometimes, the robots surprise her.

During one soccer game against robots from another university, the Carnegie Mellon team scored on a particular play. That sent a positive signal to the robot's computers, which are designed to reward success and discourage failures in the game.

Her robots then tried the play again ? and scored again. It turned out they had discovered a programing flaw in the other team of robots, just like some sports teams find a flaw in their opponents.

In the second half Velosa's robot's kept using the same play, scoring every time, and thus reinforcing the tendency to try the play over and over. The robots crushed the other team.

"It was programmed by me, but it looked to me as if they learned," she said. "I believe we are much closer to having robots be able to coexist with humans. The beautiful thing is you see the robots learning.

Jane Chafin: A Book About Paris Has Its Way With Me

TASCHEN has had its way with me again. This time it's Paris: Portrait of a City, a voluptuous oversized volume of photographs of the city of my dreams, a visual feast covering 150 years of Parisian history and culture that put me in a prolonged trance-like state. Glancing at my notebook afterwards, I saw that I had jotted down notes about so many events, artists, writers, photographers, entertainers and architecture that I had almost re-created the index -- that's how rich this book is.

We see a photograph of Toulouse-Lautrec surrounded by a grouping of his paintings and a naked prostitute in the bordello he frequented; Brassa?'s portrait of a beautiful young Salvador Dali in his studio; Man Ray's group portrait of the "Bureau for Surrealist Research;" another Brassa? of Pablo Picasso in his studio seated next to a huge pagoda-like potbellied stove; and Edward Steichen's portraits of Rodin and Matisse with their work.

Toulouse-Lautrec in the bordello he frequented in Rue des Moulins, shown with his paintings of its "residents", 1894. ? Biblioth?que nationale de France.

We see an 1855 photograph of construction on the Louvre Palace, on the order of Napoleon III who decided to connect it to the Tuileries Palace making it the largest palace in the world. A 1942 image shows empty frames hanging in the museum, artists' names and titles chalked on the wall behind them, their contents having been removed and stored in a secret location when war was declared.

A four-page foldout shows the successive stages of construction of the Eiffel Tower; while the endpapers show a more modern view of the tower, Frank Horvat's 1974 Shoe and Eiffel Tower, the tower itself dwarfed by a woman's ankles and shoes. There is an eerie black and white photo of Hitler posing in front of the tower during the German occupation. More upbeat images show a woman hanging precariously on the edge of the tower, skirt flared out in the wind, while another captures the tower in silhouette against fireworks during the 1989 Bicentennial of the Revolution.

One of the most spectacular accidents of the age occurred at the Montparnasse railway station: a train from Granville, traveling at somewhere between 40 and 60 kph, was unable to stop: it careered through the buffers, off the platform and through the fa?ade of the building, from which it fell onto Place de Rennes below, 1895. ? There is Nadar's first aerial photo of Paris taken from a balloon, the first ever photo taken with a Kodak/Eastman camera, Lee Miller's Paris in the Snow, Cartier-Bresson's Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare, and Rene Jacques' The Tarring Machine with its ghost-like image of Notre Dame in the background framed between two lamp posts.

Coco Chanel, Kiki de Montparnasse, Josephine Baker, Brigitte Bardot, Collette, Bijou, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Sarah Bernhardt, Simone de Beauvoir, Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Jean Renoir, Balzac, Orson Welles, Sartre, Yves St. Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld are all represented. We see the Moulin Rouge, Cafe Les Deux Magots, dirigibles, balloons, expositions, revolutions, occupations, celebrations and much much more.

Managing advanced prostate cancer: what's going to be presented at

So there are going to be > 180 papers specific to the management of prostate cancer presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) starting in Chicago next weekend. Some will be trivial; several will be ?interesting?; a very few will be important.

If you want to look through the complete list of abstracts of the papers on prostate cancer, the easiest thing to do is just to click here. This link will take you to the complete list of prostate cancer-specific abstracts.

Among the list of 180+ prostate cancer-specific papers to be presented, here are the ones that we know already are (perhaps) really important in the current and future management of advanced forms of the disease:

  • On Saturday, June 2, Ryan et al. will present the detailed results of the interim analysis of the international, randomized, double-blind, Phase III?trial of abiraterone acetate + prednisone vs. placebo + prednisone in chemotherapy-naive patients with metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). The abstract of this particular paper will not be available until just after midnight on June 1, but we?already know that the results of this trial?are positive, so the?question is, ?What?s new in the details???
  • On Sunday, June 3, Hussain et al. will be presenting data from S9346/INT-0162 ? the international, Phase III clinical trial of intermittent (IAD) versus continuous androgen deprivation (CAD) in men with hormone sensitive metastatic prostate cancer. The abstract of this particular paper will not be available until just after midnight on June 2, but we do know that the results of this trial have been described as ?practice changing,? so it is a safe bet that the data show that IAD is at least clinically equivalent to CAD.
  • On Monday, June 4, Armstrong et al. will present updated, long-term results of the randomized, Phase II clinical trial of tasquinimod vs. a placebo in men with mCRPC, including data on overall survival. The abstract of this paper is available on line and does suggest a significant survival benefit associated with tasquinimod treatment. A multinational, randomized Phase III trial of tasquinimod is already under way and (hopefully) will be able to confirm these outcome data.
  • Also on Monday, June 4, Ileana et al. will present the first data on the use of abiraterone acetate in treatment of men with mCRPC who have already progressed after treatment with docetaxel-based chemotherapy and with enzalutamide (MDV3100). The abstract is available on line now; it suggests that only a subset of men with mCRPC who have received prior treatment with docetaxel and enzalutamide will then respond significantly to third-line tretament with abiraterone acetate + prednisone, but this is a small study and we should not over-interpret these data.
  • A third paper to be presented on Monday will be one in which Eisenberger et al. report the final results of a trial originally designed to compare the benefits of immediate vs. delayed hormonal therapy and docetaxel-based chemotherapy after radical prostatectomy in men with high-risk prostate cancer. This study was never able to accrue sufficient patients and so a definitive result from this trial has never been obtained. There is no suggestion from the available data that immediate hormonal therapy + chemotherapy is clinically beneficial in this group of patients; equally, however, we can?t say with certainty that it may not be.
  • On Tuesday, June 5, Parker et al. will present updated results of the international, randomized, double-blind, Phase III clinical trial of radium-223 in treatment of men with mCRPC (also known as the ALSYMPCA trial). Again, the abstract of this paper will not actually be available until just after midnight on June 4, but there are rumors that these updated results are better than the data originally presented last September. We shall have to wait to see if that is really true.
  • Also on Tuesday, June 5, Chi et al. will present the results of a Phase II clinical trial of OGX-427 + prednisone vs. prednisone alone in the treatment of chemotherapy naive men with mCRPC. The abstract of this paper is already available on line and suggests a real potential clinical benefit to treatment with OGX-427, but this is a small trial and only some of the patients appear to benefit based on this study.

Over the next days we shall also address data from other studies being presented at ASCO, but the ones referenced above are perhaps the most important to those patinets with or at risk for advanced forms of prostate cancer today.

Arthritis And Ayurveda Therapy For Healthy Life

?

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda means the knowledge for long life. it is a form of traditional medicine system, which has its roots in India. It is also called as the alternative medicine. The Susruta Samhita and Chakara Samhita are the initial literatures on Ayurveda for Indian medical practice.

Ayurveda is based on the principles of five basic elements namely Prithvi (earth), Jala (water), Agni (fire), Vayu (air) and Akasa (sky), which forms the universe as well as the human body. Ayurveda insists on balance of three essential energies namely Vayu Vata (air & space ? wind), Pitta (fire &water ? bile) and Kapha (water & earth ? phlegm). According to Ayurvedic theory, these elemental energies are important for health.

Arthritis and Ayurveda methods suggest that the strength of the human body can be attained from a healthy metabolic system, achieving good digestion and right excretion.

It also tells the importance of exercise, yoga and meditation.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis problem occurs in our body due to poor digestion and weak colon system. So, this indigestive food forms a heap in our body. As a result of it, toxins are developed and it is led to colon causing pain in the joints. In arthritis and Ayurveda method, it is classified into 3 categories such as Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata arthritis

This kind of arthritis occurs commonly among people and Vata known as digestive fire is found in excess and auto immune system of our body shuts down and so causes pain in the joints. As a result of it stiffness, dryness and pain occurs in our body.

How to treat

Taking hot baths and Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage using sesame oil and Mahanarayan oil helps to reduce the pain. Capsules like Boswellia and Commiphora Mukul, which is made of Herbs can be taken three times a day, which helps in healing it. These capsules act as anti-inflammatory, pain killing, improving flexibility and to strengthen bones. Avoid potato and eggplant and dairy foods and having hot baths improves the situation.

Pitta Arthritis

This type happens due to heat, swelling or burning sensation. The excessive heat or pitta in the body and gathering of acid by products of metabolism leads to this type of arthritis.

How to treat

Cool compresses and Abhyanga massage using coconut oil and Khsheerbala oil reduces the pitta in the body. Five to seven days of detoxification diet and anti-pitta diet for cooling the body along with dry and heavy food will help in reducing the pain. Herbal capsules are given three times a day, which helps us to rejuvenate our body. Using ice bag for cooling is advised.

Kapha Arthritis

The symptom for this type of Arthritis is dull ache, congestion and swelling. It starts with the formation of lumps and sinuses, which causes slow digestion and metabolism blocking the removal of Ama.

How to treat

Having hot baths and Abhyanga massage using Almond oil and Sahacharadi oil reduces the Pitta in the body. One or two weeks of detoxification diet and anti Kapha helps in reducing it. Light, dry and warm foods are suggested for curing. In arthritis and Ayurveda methods herbal medicines are given three times a day, which helps in attaining stamina.

Social Studies Teacher Tells Student He Can Be Arrested for Slandering President Obama

classroomHunter Rogers was sitting in his high school social studies class when his teacher began talking about Mitt Romney being a bully when he was in high school. Even though that story has been discredited, the teacher wanted to engage the students in a dialogue about it. Hunter asked if Barack Obama had ever bullied anyone (by his own admission, the president once pushed a girl).

The teacher responded that she didn?t know, and somehow ended up on a tirade about how wrong it is to slander the president by asking him the same questions you might ask Mitt Romney. She went so far as to tell Hunter and his classmates that you can be arrested for slandering the president.

Hunter got the whole exchange on tape.

The North Carolina teen had asked a classmate to record the exchange so that he could prove to his parents that this particular teacher was not teaching, but bullying kids to adopt her own political point of view. This was not a teaching moment. She told the students that they could be arrested for openly disagreeing with the president. Last I checked, this America, not Soviet Russia, and the First Amendment contains an explicit protection of free speech.

This teacher is either lying to her students, or if she actually believes what she said, too incompetent to be a teacher. The school has since suspended her with pay. No word on whether she will be reinstated, educated further on the subject she is supposed to be teaching, or if she?ll remain on the payroll indefinitely without even pretending to work.

Teachers that engage students in political discussions need to be open to letting kids explore their own ideologies and develop their own beliefs. They should not be biased, but factual. The kids they are teaching are students, not subjects to be verbally beaten into political submission.

Talking over kids trying to raise valid questions about candidates teaches them that political discourse is really a monologue. America is a place where everyone is free to voice his or her own opinion, regardless of who agrees or disagrees with it. You?d think a social studies teacher would know that.

Unbelieveable Wood Working - Family Woodworking

"I must need new glasses, is this an eye test?? you're an eye doctor aren't you???" said Dan Mooney

To all of you who responded in a similar manner---Remember the "Emperor's Clothes."

OK, so next time I will try to clean up my grammar. Give me some credit---I did take some pictures. However, it takes some one to take the pictures and the someone who should have been in the picture, Glenn, was up on the roof doing chimney sweep work for his dear old dad, who wanted to stay clean. Therefore we used the Emperor as the live subject.

(ARA) - The arrival of summer has many homeowners outside planting, preparing the patio for cookouts, and taking evening strolls through the neighborhood. Often, this extended outdoor time brings on a desire to improve a home's curb appeal.

But home improvement projects can be expensive, and many homeowners are still wary about spending money on renovations, despite the improving real estate market. So what's the best way to spruce up the appearance of your house without breaking the bank?

There are many budget-friendly exterior changes that will make a big difference in curb appeal. A fresh coat of paint can work wonders, whether it's applied to the entire house or just on the front door. If your house is painted a neutral color like white or cream, be adventurous and try an energizing red or soothing aqua on your front door; the pop of color will add appealing interest.

While a landscaping overhaul can be very expensive, window boxes or planters are an easy and cost-effective way to add natural beauty to your home's facade. Learn how to build a container garden that will provide extra dimension and color to a front porch or patio.

Take a look at your house from the street. Do your windows look bare? Try adding shutters, but make sure they are appropriately sized. Buying shutters that are smaller than the windows they flank is an all-too-common mistake homeowners make, which leads to the windows looking disproportionately small.

And if you have a garage, don't overlook the importance of a good-looking garage door. A garage door can account for up to 30 percent of a home's exterior that is seen from the street, so having an attractive one is vital to good curb appeal. But, like shutters to a window, a garage door should be appropriately matched to its house's architectural style. Not sure which door fits your home the best? Try out the handy Door Designer tool at www.amarr.com, which lets you choose from six different home styles and then matches an appropriate garage door based on that style.

Of all these budget-friendly improvement projects, a new garage door will give you the best return on your investment and provide the most value for your home. Over the last few years, surveys conducted by the Remodeling Cost vs. Value Report indicate that installing new garage doors has been the project moving up the most in the rankings.

Most people, to some degree, factor in resale when making their home improvement decisions. Both structural and decorative curb appeal is important when it comes time to sell a home, bringing in a larger number of prospective buyers and making it more likely that they will make the purchase.

According to principals at Smykal Renovations, a contracting firm in suburban Chicago, curb appeal projects "may not have the 'wow' factor of a major kitchen remodel, but [they] pay off more in the end."

So don't let budget constraints keep you from improving the appearance of your home's exterior. There are many low-cost changes that can be made that have a big impact on how your home looks. Whether you're making these changes to enjoy for yourself, or to make your home more marketable, the summer is a great time to get outside and focus on curb appeal.

93% Marvel's The Avengers

All Critics (267) | Top Critics (44) | Fresh (249) | Rotten (18) | DVD (3)

Never underestimate the entertainment value of the Hulk Smash.

If you are a Marvel fan, then The Avengers will feel like Christmas. Thanks to the merry doings of the director, Joss Whedon, all your favorite characters are here, as shiny and as tempting as presents under the tree.

Ultimately, it all comes back to Whedon: His clear vision for each character and how they might be profitably intermingled; his unexpected knack for action choreography; his funny, tender, immaculately constructed script.

A spectacle in the grandest sense of the word ...

Whedon, a pop-genre magician best known for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a master of viewer manipulation - because he never gives up his own seat in the crowd.

The performances are so well-pitched in The Avengers, meshing with such vividness and ease, that it's tempting to overpraise the good but not great movie that surrounds them.

Delivers big time with everything longtime fans and newcomers alike could possibly want in a summer blockbuster that definitely surpasses the hype.

This too-long adventure is a sensory overload --- complete with loud, protracted battle scenes and hunky super heroes who provide the necessary eye candy. It's also very funny, and highly entertaining.

There is much humor laced throughout the film, giving it an air of not taking itself too seriously -- which is as it should be in a film of this genre.

The Avengers lives up to every last ounce of hype.

It's a blockbuster that manages to please with intelligence and fun. Whedon makes it look easy.

It's all very smoothly done but comes without a hint of surprise or revelation.

The Main Event is pretty much what you'd expect ? noisy, overlong, wall-to-wall CG effects and arcane superhero lore ... Yes, it's all fairly formulaic, but on a Wow! scale never before experienced.

If you only see one movie this year over and over again, it'll probably be this one.

I have a feeling that this will be a comfort film for myself and many other film geeks for years to come, just like the Indiana Jones or Star Wars movies.

Whedon delivers a thoroughly entertaining compilation of the best of these heroes while never hiding either his giddy love for the characters or the wry wit that has formed the bedrock of his career.

The Avengers will surely rank among the best superhero movies, if not summer blockbusters, of all time.

The Avengers is a fun time at the movies. That's as important as anything.

Whedon gives balance even to relative minnows Hawkeye and the Black Widow by giving each their moment to shine.

The real hero of The Avengers is not Iron Man, Thor or even Nick Fury. It's Joss Whedon.

There's also great chemistry between the principals, who all get their moment in the sun.

The Avengers greatest accomplishment could be this: its ability to make an entire audience feel like children reading their favorite comic for the very first time.

The movie engages the viewer from a very strong opening sequence through the two bonus scenes included in the closing credits. The nearly two and a half hour running time passes by swiftly and leaves you eagerly awaiting a follow-up sequel.

It's a long ride before jaws drop and the eyeball caressing spectacle of The Avengers clicks into high gear

UN: Syrian forces, opposition committing crimes

GENEVA (AP) ? Syrian government forces and anti-government armed groups are both carrying out unlawful killings, torturing opponents and abusing children in the 15-month-old uprising, a U.N.-appointed panel of human rights experts said Thursday, though it underlined that security forces are still responsible for the largest share of the violence.

The findings by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria show a chilling pattern of abuses on both sides of a conflict that it says has become "increasingly militarized" despite U.N. cease-fire efforts. The report is based on hundreds of interviews since March with victims and witnesses who fled the country.

The three-member panel says the conflict has shifted and the government now faces armed and well-organized fighters bolstered by defectors. The widespread human rights abuses by government forces occur "most often during large-scale, military attacks on specific locations known for hosting defectors and other anti-government sympathizers," it says.

The report documents unlawful killings by government forces in Idlib, Homs, Aleppo, Hama, Damascus and Daraa and in numerous villages. It says a clear pattern has emerged in which an attack is preceded by a blockade of main roads in a neighborhood or village.

The panel also cites accounts of security forces using both precise shelling to hit opposition stronghold and indiscriminate targeting of residential areas where opposition fighters are believed to be hiding.

After the shelling, it says, security forces go in, backed by snipers on rooftops often using school buildings, and search house-to-house. The reports says that in some cases, suspects and others were executed immediately, according to repeated accounts.

"Fighters in anti-government armed groups were killed after being captured or wounded. In some particularly grave instances, entire families were executed in their homes ? usually the family members of those opposing the government," it says.

The reports says government forces have resorted to use of beatings and electric shocks on captured opponents and killed children by sniper fire. Children, including boys as young as 10, who have been detained by government forces, it says, have repeatedly said they are "tortured to admit that older male members of their fammly are Free Syrian Army? soldiers or supporters."

In March, a school in Atarib was occupied by government tanks, with snipers posted on its rooftop, and another school in a nearby village was burned down because of rumors its headmaster was an anti-government sympathizer, the report says. In April, the report says, a village school in Hama was used as a government command post with snipers on the roof.

The commission is chaired by Brazilian professor Paulo Sergio Pinheiro and includes Karen AbuZayd, who formerly headed the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, and Yakin Erturk, a former U.N. investigator on violence against women.

It has published previous reports on the conflict that the U.N. says has killed well over 9,000 people. In March, the commission handed U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay a secret, sealed list of top Syrian officials who could face investigation for crimes against humanity carried out by Syria?s security forces against government opponents.

But, the report says there is a growing list of abuses committed by anti-government armed groups, including executions of military forces and suspected informers. It says the opposition has increasingly resorted to improvised explosive devices.

The panel says it has videotaped sessions in which captured Syrian government forces or supporters are seen confessing under torture, with signs of bruising and bleeding. Anti-government armed groups also have abducted civilians and government forces apparently for prisoner exchanges or ransom.

Children are also being used as messengers and cooks, or to deliver medical supplies to field hospitals. The panel says its staff met children who regularly traversed the Turkish-Syrian border. Four had earlier been injured by sniper fire.

Syria's main opposition council, meanwhile, said it has accepted the resignation of its Paris-based president who earlier offered to step down amid mounting criticism of his leadership.

The executive committee of the Syrian National Council asked Burhan Ghalioun to pursue his duties until a new president is elected at a meeting on June 9 and 10.

The SNC has been plagued by infighting and divisions since its inception in September, complicating Western efforts to bolster the opposition. Ghalioun's offer to resign came just days after he was re-elected for a third, three month term in a controversial vote in Rome.

Good news about foreclosures - Mayes Harris Team Real Estate

I?ve been hearing and reading reports about the foreclosure rates declining across America (evidently rates are at a five-year low), which is good news overall.? It means that Americans are feeling more confident and able to keep up with their mortgage payments, making good decisions, and that the overall real estate market will be on an incline.? Major markets like Baltimore, Atlanta, Phoenix, Denver, areas on Florida?s gulf cost, are all reporting decreases in foreclosure rates, so other areas, in theory, should follow.? This all bodes well for a healthy economy and improvements in real estate.

With this good news in mind, I?d like you to take a moment to reflect on the holiday we?re about to celebrate.? Please give thanks to anyone you know who has served or is serving our country.? Please hang your flag with pride.

Happy Memorial Day!

Dish's ?Auto-Hop? ad skipping device in legal showdown with TV ...

Here we go again. Another disruptive TV technology, another major lawsuit.?This time Dish Network and the major TV networks are suing each other over what Dish calls its ?best in class DVR? technology that lets viewers skip over tv commercials with a single click.

?Ultimately, this case is about consumer choice,? said Dish in a complaint filed Thursday in Manhattan federal court. The satellite TV provider wants the court to declare that it is not infringing copyright or breaching the terms of its contracts with Fox, NBC, ABC and CBS. Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter reports that Fox has filed a separate suit against Dish to ?aggressively defend the future of free, over-the-air television.?

Dish?s ad-skipping device stands out because, unlike other DVRs, viewers can skip an entire set of commercials rather than fast-forwarding or skipping in 30 second jumps.

The so-called ?ad eraser? may delight consumers, but the TV networks reacted angrily during a conclave with advertisers in New York last week.

?How does Charlie Ergen expect me to produce ?CSI??without commercials?? said chief executive of CBS Corporation, Leslie Moonves, according to the New York Times. (Also, see my colleague Daniel Frankel?s excellent report on the strategy behind Dish?s ?Molotov cocktail? at the broadcasters.)

In its complaint, Dish portrays its technology as a natural extension of existing time-shifting practices and points out that Americans have for decades chosen to disregard ads in one way or another.

Dish also claims that its technology does not alter the broadcasters? signals and that viewers can only skip the ads the day after a show is aired live.

The TV networks are facing significant disruptions?despite receiving new fees that oblige cable and satellite providers to pay them for carrying their over-the-air signals. In addition to its legal tussle with Dish over ad skipping, the TV networks are also suing Aereo, a start-up service that uses tiny antennas to broadcast shows directly to viewers? iPads and iPhones.

Here?s a copy of Dish?s complaint:

(AP) ? BP Products North America Inc. has agreed to install $400 million in new air pollution controls at its northwestern Indiana oil refinery and pay an $8 million fine under a deal announced Wednesday with the government and environmental groups.

The oil giant agreed to the fine to settle allegations of air quality permit violations since 2001, according to a consent decree filed in federal court in Hammond. The deal also resolves objections by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to an air permit issued by Indiana.

Under the agreement, environmental groups including the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Sierra Club agreed to drop their own challenges to the permit.

The agreement, subject to a 30-day public comment period and final court approval, is designed to reduce harmful air pollution by about 4,000 tons annually at BP's sprawling refinery in Whiting, about 20 miles southeast of Chicago.

The refinery is undergoing a $3.8 billion expansion that is due to open next year. BP has said the expanded refinery would be the nation's top processor of heavy high-sulfur Canadian crude oil, boosting its annual production of gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel by 15 percent to about 4.7 billion gallons annually.

The project is designed to deal with the higher level of impurities found in that crude, but environmentalists contend the refinery would worsen pollution in the area.

After the Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued an air permit for the expansion in 2008, the Natural Resources Defense Council sued to block it. Although the EPA initially approved the expansion, it later filed Clean Air Act violations against the oil giant. With the Justice Department, the EPA also alleged the expansion violated a 2001 consent decree.

"The permit that BP and the state of Indiana drafted did not reflect reality," said the NRDC's Ann Alexander, lead attorney for the environmental groups. "And as the country wakes up to the mess being made by tar sands all over the country, it will be harder and harder for them to keep trying to play these games."

Steve Cornell, president of BP Products North America, said the deal "protects jobs, consumers, and the environment."

"This multi-billion dollar modernization project is the largest private-sector investment in Indiana history and ensures the Whiting Refinery will continue to provide fuel and jobs for the region for decades to come," Cornell said in a statement.

Under the deal, BP agreed to a new system to reduce the flaring of refinery gas, new controls and practices to lower emissions throughout the refinery, and other environmental upgrades

The settlement imposes some of the lowest emission limits in refinery settlements to date, enhancing controls on wastewater containing benzene. It also requires the refinery to spend $9.5 million on projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA said.

BP also will install equipment to monitor emissions of benzene, sulfur dioxide and other pollutants and to post the data online.

Nicole Barker, executive director of the regional environmental group Save the Dunes, another partner to the agreement, said the pollution reductions will benefit residents of northwest Indiana and the Lake Michigan ecosystem.

"The refinery sits in the midst of one of the most unique ecosystems in the world and that needs to be protected too," Barker said.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued a statement saying it was pleased with the outcome of the consent decree.

In the future, your skin could solve your heart problem

Israeli scientists transform skin cells into heart cells for the first time ever

There may come a time when doctors can patch up your?damaged heart not with fancy futuristic materials, but with your own skin. A paper recently published in the?European Heart Journal details the work of a?team of Israeli scientists who took sample skin cells from two patients ? aged 51 and 61???with heart problems. For the first time ever, they were able to transform the skin cells into healthy, beating heart cells.

According to team leader,?Lior Gepstein, the resulting cells were "equivalent to the stage of [the patient's] heart cells when he was just born." After forming heart tissue out of the erstwhile skin cells, the scientists cultivated it in a petri dish with real heart tissue.

The researchers found that after 24 to 48 hours, the man-made heart tissue merged with the real sample?? the whole thing was even beating. They then implanted the hybrid tissue into healthy rats whose little rodent hearts accepted and formed connections with it.

While the results sound extremely promising, it would take a long time before the technique can be used in hospitals to save lives. Scientists believe that it could take as much as 10 to 15 years before clinical trials on humans even begin. But if this method proves to be effective, then we don't have to rely purely on?mechanical devices or transplants to cure advanced heart diseases anymore.
