BMW and Toyota Lay Out Three Point Advanced Technologies Venture
BMW Group and Toy?ota Motor Corp. signed bind?ing agree?ments last week on a major green tech?nol?ogy joint ven?ture. To meet?ing their strate?gic tar?get of devel?op?ing advanced tech?nolo?gies to power clean vehi?cles, the two global automak?ers shared a few details on their plan. Fuel cell vehi?cles are play?ing the lead?ing role in the project?
Design?ing com?po?nents for fuel cell vehi?cles ? Toy?ota and BMW say they believe fuel-cell cars will play a key role in the push to elim?i?nate harm?ful auto emis?sions. The cost and size of fuel-cell stacks is com?ing down, while the dri?ving ranges are grow?ing longer. The joint ven?ture between the two com?pa?nies includes devel?op?ment of a fuel-cell vehi?cle sys?tem, includ?ing the fuel cell stack, hydro?gen tank, motor and bat?tery by?2020.
Cre?at?ing light?weight mate?ri?als and tech?nolo?gies ? BMW and Toy?ota have under?taken a fea?si?bil?ity study to define a joint plat?form for a mid-size sports vehi?cle that is to be com?pleted by the end of 2013. They?ll also be explor?ing joint devel?op?ment of light?weight technologies.
Devel?op?ing next-generation lithium bat?ter?ies ? expands the scope of the project a year after the two com?pa?nies agreed to work together on lithium-ion bat?ter?ies. Joint research will be done to develop a lithium-air bat?tery with energy den?sity greatly exceed?ing that of cur?rent lithium-ion batteries.
The grow?ing part?ner?ship between the two automak?ers is bound to inspire other car com?pa?nies to con?sider alliances to pool their resources, said Jeremy Anwyl, CEO of Edmunds.com. ?Fuel-cell cars are a more ele?gant solu?tion, and there?s real progress being made,? Anwyl said. ?This bat?tery issue may be a detour on the way to a fuel-cell future.?
