Recent Advancements within the Hearing Aid Industry

Technology influences almost every aspect of our modern world. According to Michael Bailey, who owns a Miracle-Ear hearing center near San Francisco, technology within the hearing industry ?woke up? within the past ten years. ?It has to do with the Baby Boomers,? says Bailey. ?The market demanded an improvement because of the Baby Boomers.?

He?s right, too. According to Miracle-Ear, America?s aging population, specifically the Baby Boom generation, is creating an ?unprecedented demand for hearing aids.? There are more people with hearing loss in America under the age of retirement than over the retirement age.

?The technology is amazing in the last ten years,? says Bailey. ?It?s advancing.? Bailey feels that the ability to program hearing aids at his San Francisco location is so much easier. It used to be a lot harder to program the aids, but now the equipment is much better. ?Everything is simpler and more precise,? he says. The hearing aid now is rechargeable; patients don?t have to change the battery anymore.

Other technological improvements the hearing industry has experienced have to do with the size of hearing aids. Miniaturization of the devices has vastly improved. Hearing aids today are much smaller than they used to be, and even the most powerful of devices can seemingly go unnoticeable in or around the ear. Additional improvements among today?s hearing aids include improvement in the level of verification. Hearing aids can also be custom programmed; the industry has gone digital, and hearing aids are computer programmable as well as custom programmed.

Patients usually come to Bailey?s hearing center near San Francisco for a hearing test. As a result of the much technological advancement within the industry, patients typically experience shorter wait times after getting a hearing test and being fitted for their hearing aids. Hearing instruments can now be fitted almost instantly. Miracle-Ear uses technology that can take a silicone impression of the inside of the ear canal, take the hardened silicone and put it in a scanning device, which then creates an electric scan that is sent by email to the hearing aid manufacturer. This process vastly reduces the amount of time the patient has to wait to receive the hearing aid and put it in their ear.

For those patients interested in coming to Bailey?s hearing center near San Francisco for a hearing test, they can easily take public transportation to get there. Bailey?s Miracle-Ear location is only about ten-to-fifteen minutes south of San Francisco.
