Holdren, who is also assistant to President Obama for S&T and co-chair of the President's Council of Advisors on S&T, will join Vice Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mark Ferguson; Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James F. Amos; Chief of Naval Research Rear. Adm. Matthew Klunder; and NATO Chief Scientist Maj. Gen. In keynotes and warfighter panels, speakers will offer their perspectives on research priorities for the future of the military and the nation. The focus will be on advancing technological development in several topical areas, including: autonomy and unmanned systems; assure access to maritime battle space; information dominance; expeditionary and irregular warfare; power projection and integrated defense; platform design and survivability; power and energy; warfighter performance; and total ownership cost.

Complementing the S&T presentations, the American Society of Naval Engineers Expo (ASNE) will host displays and demonstrations, including:

  • DARwIn-OP, or Dynamic Anthropomorphic Robot with Intelligence - Open Platform, humanoid robot or "soccer bot"
  • Digital tutor
  • Flexible solar blanket
  • Virtual canine improvised explosive device-detecting demonstration
  • Stop-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle
  • Technovation phone appthis app is designed to boost technical education.

The biennial conference opens avenues for dialogue between ONR leaders and experts and nearly 1,000 attendees from industry, academia and other government agencies.

Two of the conference's flagship events, Pitch a Principal and an on-site poster session underscore the opportunity for participation. Submissions should relate to one of the nine topical areas and will be accepted online through Sept. 21, the newly extended deadline.

Pitch a Principal provides an opportunity for members of outside organizations to meet privately with ONR subject-matter experts and research portfolio managers about S&T initiatives. The poster session allows selected attendees to showcase their research and technology ideas via a poster in the exhibit hall on the evening of Oct. 22.
