Health Insurance Proposal May Delay Printing MO Ballots ...

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Elections officials throughout Missouri will be cautioned against printing their Nov. 6 ballots until a lawsuit over a health insurance proposal is resolved.

The lawsuit by Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and others claims a ballot summary written by the secretary of state?s office is unfair and misleading. A judge will hear arguments Aug. 28.

The lawsuit may not be resolved until after Secretary of State Robin Carnahan certifies items to go on ballots statewide. Under a court order released Tuesday, Carnahan will include a disclaimer when she certifies the items advising local officials against printing ballots until the wording of the health insurance question is approved.

The initiative backed by Kinder would bar Missouri officials from creating a health insurance exchange without approval from voters or lawmakers.
